so much of these things are true. I have tried everything out there. After many years and many doctors trying to put this in my head, the real answer is WATER. drink water....lots and lots. I have started drinking nothing but water. I've been doing this for 7 months. I eat anything i want. Any meal i want, any sweets i want. AND i've lost about 25 pds. my clothes feel better, i feel better. its unbelieveable the difference it has made. And to think it was right in front of me all the time !!!!!

Mindful living helps me. Knowing when I'm hungry, and planning ahead to have the healthy food ready to eat also prevents overeating.

Although the comment is really intense, I have to agree. I'm overweight because overeating is much easier than learning how to date as a gay twentysomething. I'm afraid my family will disown me if I come out. I'm afraid I won't be accepted in the gay world. I'm afraid of not being loved. I'm afraid that I'll never be loved.

I'm choosing to change my life.

Actually, we needn to pay attention to our daily diet since bad eating habit may cause terrible disease.Sometimes we are overeating ,so the 5 Ways given by Geneen Roth are good for us.

Y'all are idiots. Everyone keeps writing all of these articles that say they have something new to say about how to lose weight, but they never do. The point is, no one who is afraid of what losing weight might mean is ever going to do it. Those of us who are overweight are overweight because something about it appeals to us. Instead of getting to the root of our issues, we obsess about whether we fit into a size six or a size fourteen or anywhere between because talking about weight is an acceptable topic for women in this country.

Most of us women are not encouraged to talk about whether we are happy except in terms of whether we have what we want in life, i.e. thinness. Our sense of satisfaction or contentment is supposed to come from whether we believe we will be able to STAY thin, or so we have been told.

We live in a capitalist country. It doesn't matter how we feel, it matters what we have. Thus, when we talk about feelings, what we are really talking about is how close we are to having everything we want.

As women, we are told that being "good" means prioritizing men's needs over our own. We are also told there are limited resources in the world, and we are reassured again and again of this with various worldwide images of starvation and environmental degradation. Thus, being a good person if one is a woman implies that one is attempting to be as thin as possible in order to leave more resources for the men around us.

This is what is called a "scarcity" perspective on the world. The resources of the world are being consumed at a ridiculously fast clip by the attempts of a small number of people to own the world. We all play along, agreeing there could not possibly enough food in this world or even this country to feed every starving person. Meanwhile, so many of us FEEL as though we are starving for so much of the time that we intuitively believe this fallacy. Most of us are nutritionally deprived of some vitamin or component used to catalyze protein production, or else we eat salad all the time when our bodies are craving fat. We take our feelings that there is not enough food in the world as reality, instead of recognizing that we have the choice not to do this to ourselves.

How many women do you know who starve themselves, then go out and buy pounds of food that they will throw up later? How many other people remain at around 600 pounds because that is easier than learning how to date at forty? How many other women remain at 100 pounds because they cannot face their anger at the stepfathers who molested them or the babysitters who raped them or the teachers who hit on them? We do not have eating disorders because we are stupid or because we don't know that we are hurting ourselves. We are as aware of this as the U.S. government is that prioritizing business interests is destroying their home as fast as ours. We are all well aware of the destruction we are causing.

When will we quit pretending knowing substitutes for action?

I find the above comment narrow-minded offensive and anti-christian.

I would ask what does eating healthier have anything to do with such

commentaries? Are we losing it?

Very good article; especially the last tip. Being astonished--taking the time to be astonished--is a great and common-sense tactic....

Well done..

the things people say about calf. if the thought process you speak of were true the population of calf would be so low you could not have a electorial vote.life must be so sad for you. you are truely in a class of people with great self gratified intelect. no god, no devil, just human law to slide around. and i bet you do that all the time. picking things up, getting over on people, being so self reliant , self strong. but the truth is you scared , lonely confussed and have little self control. seems sicker than i first thought. seek help.

Church founders established the racket of convincing people to become church benefactors here so they would get free food forever in Heaven. If people couldn't be bribed that way, they could be scared into parting with their assets by being threatened with eternal torture in fabled Hell. Some of the most detailed pages in Scripture tell exactly what kind of sacrifices must be made, in addition to cash & free labor in nunneries & monasteries. Clerics were to get the finest meat, vegetables, fish, etc. Tiny amounts were burned & the rest became feasts eaten in private with lavish amounts of wine. As for people being depressed with life's problems and overeating, much misery comes from Ban Abortionists forcing women to produce big families of church benefactors. The same big families become cheap labor through sheer weight of numbers. NOBODY can create enough jobs when population is not strictly and wisely regulated to Nature's support system. We need taxpaid sex education, contraception, voluntary sterilization & abortion, to help end misery-induced overeating. Nice topic.
