I'd bet my paycheck that a handful of these comments are posted by Food Industry Shills.

The numbers cited in this article are ridiculous. A single serving of Heinz Ketchup is 15 calories -- NOT 160. Minute Maid Lemonade is about 100 calories per serving .. according to Baldaufs figures, it comes out to 800. Who edited this tripe?

I think it's disingenuous to liken sweet non-foods like lemonade to high carb snacks like granola: a whopping 11 grams (44 calories) of sugar is practically nothing, and the whole idea behind granola is a quick portable food.
You're also failing to draw a distinction between glucose and sucrose (or fructose, which is more likely in the US); if I ate a couple of handfuls of dried apricots, I'd take a significant sugar jolt, even though it's unlikely that anyone would have felt the need to add sugar to such an already sweet product. According to some random nutrition site I just googled, 130 grams of dried apricots have 69 grams of sugar...Compare THAT to granola.

I bought a 1% store brand yogurt thinking it would be similar to Light and Fit. When I got home and saw the back of the yogurt label I was horrified to find out it had 220 calories and 42 grams of sugar. that is more sugar then a snickers bar! Lesson learn again read labels carefully in stores can't judge based on what sounds healthy.

When a health-related story such as this hits the mainstream media after being picked up by the Medical - Industrial Complex you can bet the information has been circulating among the health nuts for decades and decades - and in the case of the dangers of processed food with its high content of sugar and high fructose corn syrup, it has.

Anyone who pays attention to the ingredient listings on the above food items will HARDLY see 'sugar' included. What you WILL see is high-fructose corn sweeteners. Your body metabolizes industrialized fructose far differently from naturally induced sucrose, glucose (or fructose) - and adds to the build-up of visceral fats around the organs (i.e. fat around the waist). Sugar from cane and beets has long since left the building - one reason Brazil decided to keep its cane crop alive by shifting it toward biofuels.
When will journalists and the media properly differentiate between HFCS and stop call it 'sugar'... ?

Please have someone rewrite this article who knows how to fact-check, preferably someone who has passed third grade arithmetic.
Ketchup contains 4-5 grams sugar per serving. And given that tomatoes are naturally high in sugar, I strongly doubt that it's all ADDED sugar.
Does Ms Baldauf really believe a glass of lemonade contains 200 grams of sugar? That's over 7 ounces (close to half a pound, Ms Baldauf). In an eight-ounce glass?
(I didn't bother checking any more of your "facts".)
Pathetic, disgraceful, and most upsetting.

it has become very difficult to find healthy food, specially while traveling. Even grocery stores often have little to offer in most cases. I don't know how these new healthcare programs will work when at some point it seems that most Americans don't actually eat food. I am no expert but how can people live on lunchables and mtn dew. ?

The author needs to check her facts.
Heinz Ketchup has 4 grams of sugar per serving not 40.
Kraft light french dressing has 7 grams of sugar per serving, not 58.
Bush's baked beans has 20 grams of sugar per serving, B&M baked beans has 10 grams of sugar per serving.
Lemonade from:
Gatorade has 14 grams per serving
Tropicana has 26 grams per serving

All facts were checked by the nutrition labels on the respective company's websites.
