You could certainly have come up with some better examples.
1.Who eats more than a single fortune cookie? They're not that tasty. One gram of sugar is four calories, 3.6 grams in a cookie = 14.4 calories. Big deal.
2.Way to go, telling people to avoid beans. Sixty calories of sugar in a one-cup serving of baked beans (I think I am the only person who ever eats that much!) compared to the nutrition and fiber in beans? Check with a nutritionist, but I think that may not be a bad tradeoff.
3. Who the heck "eats" a "one-cup serving" of ketchup???? Salad dressing? (well, some people do use a large amount) Coffee creamer? Sheesh!
Nonetheless, people need to learn to read the labels on everything they buy. Thanks!

"Sarah Baldauf here, the author of this article. Let me offer some clarification on the numbers and how I got them.
Using the "USDA Database for the Added Sugars Content of Selected Foods" (a .pdf that can be found here: www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/Data/add_sug/addsug01.pdf ), I pulled the added sugar values of the listed foods, which are given in values based on 100 grams of each food item. Using the corresponding nutrition labels on www.NutritionData.com, I found serving sizes, which I used to calculate the added sugar per serving of each food item. The calculations were not based on any brand name food items."
Ms. Baldauf, I am a member of the NutritionData.com community, and I am stunned by your inability to use such a well-designed site and distiguish between a cup and a serving size, when all you have to do is click the arrow to highlight the correct amount and all other info is automatically updated for you.
A serving size of ketchup is a tablespoon.
A serving of liquid light creamer is one fluid ounce.
A serving of powdered light creamer is one ounce.
A serving of barbecue sauce is two tablespoons.
A serving of salad dressing is one ounce.
A serving of lemonade powder is 18 grams.
Don't blame NutritionData for your failure to use common sense about the portion sizes. An author in a nationally published newspaper should know how to research better. All portion sizes were/are already listed on the ND site, you just had to select them. Do you use the default state, etc on forms on your computer? Same concept.

NO ONE IS MENTIONING THE LARGE AMOUNT OF SUGARS IN SOME FORM AVAILABLE IN BREAKFAST CEREALS! A MULTIBILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY WHISH IS JUST AN EXTENTION OF THE CANDY AISLE. THE COMMERCIALS SHOW LAARGE BOWLS FULL OF CEREAL! NOT THE SMALL SERVING PER PERSON WRITTEN ON THE BOX! ADD THE SUGAR IN MILK PLUS THE SUGAR IN BANNANAS AND YOU ARE CONSUMING AT LEAST 400 CAL. OF SUGAR ALONE. ALL THESE BOXES OF CEREAL ARE IS SUGAR IN SOME FORM, SOME FIBER.

Wether or not it's a cup or a tablespoon our foods of all types (condiments, beverages, or main course) have a ludicrous amount of sugar added to them. It has been this way as far as I can remember and will probably continue to do so until there is a public uproar about it. Not that I expect or want one, but it's just the point of the article to give individuals a baseline spacial reference as to how much of what they're eating is actually just added sugar. Enjoy your meals, everyone!

Since when is a serving of ketchup 1 cup? A tablespoon I would believe. Same with salad dressings, creme substitutes and BBQ sauce.
Did the proof readers all get laid off?

A ONE cup serving of ketchup? Sorry, but I don't know anybody that puts an entire cup of ketchup on their burger; a serving of ketchup is 1 tablespoon, which has 4 grams (or 1 teaspoon) of sugar. Yes, ketchup is still high in sugar, but let's state the facts here rather than exaggerating a serving! The same thing goes for a SERVING of reduced-fat salad dressing. A SERVING is not a cup, it is 2 tablespoons (6 grams of sugar).
Yes, it is true, we eat far too much sugar. However there are a few exaggerations in this article.
