I am a retired physical therapist and consider your statement 'The key to your back is your front, and the most important way to prevent the misery of low back pain is to concentrate on your core muscles. Your core is the belt of muscles that wraps around your midsection. Your stomach muscles pull your trunk forward as in a crunching motion. It is your back extensor muscle groups that give you postural support and prevent strain (poor posture, lifting etc) in your back. The plank and cobra (yoga) are two of the best exercises one can do for your back.

BACK: "The key to your back is your front..." Well, no - the key to your back is your back - and having appropriate strength in "core" muscles to provide it support.

"Place your hands just above your hips and tighten the muscles under your palms. " Err? Not a good description of how to engage core muscles, and very few people call it "bracing".

Heel Step Downs - why maintain the flexed ankle? Most beginners will have difficulty doing a short-step lunge, let alone have the balance needed for this.

Plank: one potential problem is compression of nerves in the forearm, particularly if the person does this with neutral hand position (thumb up). If you do the plank or side plank and get tingling along the arm or little finger, you now know the cause.

Side plank: "The side plank can be modified by supporting your legs with your knees." I am at a loss to see how this could be done - my knees don't bend sideways!

Arm Raises: Photos A and C show the arm raised considerably above the shoulder. It is an advantage to do these exercises in front of a mirror or use the opposite hand to feel the shoulder stays in the right position.
