Nice article, I have been wanting to take hormone replacement therapy because I suffer from post menopausal discomfort but I was afraid that it might increase my risk for breast cancer because our family history with this disease. But Medquest supplements really helped for many years now.

First of all, a special note to Dr. Adriane Fugh-Berman: The Womans Health Initiative study that you mentioned several times is NOT A BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONE STUDY ! big difference. PREMPRO is not a natural hormone with anywhere close to the normal hormone levels. Also we know that hormones ORALLY consumed increase a womans, or a mans risk of cancer. Hormones consumed in this manner are fractioned into un-natural and unhealthy elements by the liver. All women should have a complete hormone analaysis done before begining a re-placement program. DIET is also just as important as anything else. It is my feeling that because we live in an environment with so many hormonally disruptive toxins, we as women need hormonal support as protection. A healthy balanced hormonal system is a healthy immune system. I am wondering how old the doctor is? I would bet that when she becomes menopausal and begins to suffer from, hot flashes that drench her when she's speaking in public, lack of sleep, vaginal dryness that makes normal sex feel like rape, foggy brain, aches, pains, weight gain, and finally depression cause all of this sucks! your tune will change and you will be running to the nearest compounding pharamacy! good luck with that

It's unfortunate that Fugh-Berman chose to cite the Women's Health Initiative Study, which used conjugated equine estrogen (synthetic) for the study participants.

"Menopausal hormone therapy DOUBLES the risk of dementia, according to data from the Women's Health Initiative, and increases age-related memory problems, too".We can't assume that bioidentical hormones are any different". Fugh-Berman

The level of ignorance surrounding this statement is jaw dropping, at best. I would recommend that she take a much less myopic approach and review the studies, and journals aside from JAMA---there's many with well designed studies, which support the use of Bio-Id HRT, which there is a strong correlation between low estrogen levels and not only early on set dementia and Alzheimer's, but advanced dry syndrome as well.

Living longer means little if one has Alzheimer's. I was on Bio HRT for 3 years, a breast cancer scare caused me to stop cold turkey. I sleep w/no problems, I actually feel more clear-headed & less irritable off the hormones. I haven't gained weight, I've actually lost a few lbs. I am having some minor hot flashes, however I'd rather put up w/the hot flashes than take risks.

I am revisiting this idea after five years being in menopause. I am 46 years old went through medical menopause at 41 because of cervical. Been "White knuckeling" life for five years and have been pretty miserable. I am frightened to do this but desperate to feel "normal" again. Weight gain (even though i am eating less and exercising every day) NO SEX DRIVE AT ALL. and sad all the time. So if you can forward information i would be happy. Thanks!

My name is Julie from Minneapolis, MN. I found Dr. Mahmud at Innovative Directions in Health (http://www.idinhealth.com) from your book BreakThrough. I always thought I had to live with the symptoms of menopause. I feel amazing now!! No more night sweats, hot flashes or brain fog and I have a sex drive again!! Thank you Suzanne for helping me get my life back.
