I am an ER physician. The discussion of intitial workup for a traumatic head injury does NOT include an XRay. That is not sensitive enough to detect a traumatic subdural or epidural hematoma or intraparenchymal hemorrhage. And at NO TIME EVER would you give a clot buster drug for these conditions. They would kill the person. The only definitive intervention is neurosurgery as indicated. Otherwise, if no signs of serious decline, just supportive measures and observation ensues.

Far more frequent than most realize and/or have an understanding of, the consequences of a head injury require quick appropriate treatment. Use precaution, wear a helmet and don't underestimate the depth of your condition if you do suffer a head injury, get help immediately. Even though I tend to agree with the doctor that there may have been an existing problem, the deficits from a head injury outweigh the decision to be sure.

a similar situation happened about 10 years ago to my friend MARK who was a great windsurfer from Hood River, Oregon, and who windsurfed the Columbia River regualrly.... he was only 29 yrs old...Anyway, he was windsurfing(surfboard with sail) in the pacific ocean in Baja California Mexico, about 3 hrs south of San Diego, Ca on vacation..I wasnt there, but his Girlfriend(weeks later) told me that he had a very minor crash, (he had way worse crashes before windsufing Im sure)...his head hit the WATER ONLY, nothing else, no marks or bruises...etc.....but it was a pretty hard SLAP on the water so she said. ......and he was just fine afterwards till about 1 hour later when he started acting wierd, had a headache, and started to fade in and out of conciousness...by the time they even got him to the closest hospital..., he stopped breathing and was dead in the car on the way to the nearest medical facility.......RIP-MArk, your friend dana......head injuries, even very minor falls could be fatal for sure., wear a helmet during any sport or recreation, no matter if beginner amateur or pro, sometimes you only get one shot.

I just hit my face & front side of my head to the pavement edge on Sat PM, I had intense bleeding from my nose. I cleaned myself before going to the emergency in Canada, where they just took x-rays of my face and sent me back even without any pain-killers, even though I was told I have a hair-line fracture in my nose. Today, after reading this I am very concerned, they should have taken an x-ray of my head or a scan. I will be going in again... why do doctors take head-injuries lightly??

I know exactly how it feels and what you go through. Thank god I am still here to talk about it. Brain injuries are by far the worst pain you can immagine. It's like getting a massive brain freeze with excessive pain and rapid growth of pain. I had a stroke and was in a comatose state. I lost more in my life than any could immagine with that accident. It isn't easy to cope with. I live with the scar and the fact6 that I am still slower than most people my age or younger than me. I pray that if any experience that type of fate may go in peace. Nobody realized I was serious untill I vomitted all over myself. Being Paralyzed for 8 months sure tought me how to be an adult and take care of myself at a young age. I have discovered that somethings have changed for the better and I am an extroardinary musician now. Everyday feels like 1997 and my accident was February 12, 1998.

First, I'd like to say that I am praying for her family and hoping that she wasn't in any pain. As someone who suffered a head injury as a child and who once had seizues because of it, I know how symptoms from head injuries can just sneak up and catch a person off guard.

Hopefully, a thourough autopsy will reveal what really happened and her family will have closure.

My advice to others is to seek immediate medical treatment for all injuries whether big or small.
