Sleep or lack of sleep a huge modern issue for all of women. Enduring bone deep fatigue in the middle of a full day is unbelievably stress inducing and then countered with feeling refreshed and awake at say 12:30am after only sleeping since 10:30pm this has been a personal cycle for what feels like forever. Following a carefully plan for efficient and effective sleep hygiene has been a battle for most of my adult life. So far it has not killed me but I understand the long term residual effects lack of sleep can manifest. Sleeping meds leave me hung over or put me in a hyper anxious mode...what works for me is if I can sleep from about 6:00am till 9:00am I am good to go...three hours seems to do the trick...the early morning rest seems to be deepest and most delightful....despite nocturnal habits I meditate daily for 25 mins.this has been practiced for some time which really keeps me fresh and lively... thanking and loving all peace claire

Nowhere do you mention the most common overlooked symptom of a poor night's rest...........sleep apnea!!

I am 68 years old, I retired in 2005, and have been using a cpap machine for 6 weeks.

I am in excellent health, excercise regularly, get an annual physical and have never had trouble falling asleep.

I fell asleep at the wheel and had a non-injury accident. The results were, my family doctor suggested I have a sleep disorder evaluation even though I didn't have any of the usual symptoms. (It was also a requirement of the State of Pa. to verify I was still competent to drive.)

The sleep disorder evaluation indicated I was not realizing the rem stage of sleep more than two hours a night and my oxygen saturation level was only 57%. (average is 90 - 95%) I was also a heavy snorer and would stop breathing several times every hour.

I had been skeptical about the whole sleep apnea ailment until I saw the results of the study. I now have more stamina, sleep through the night without bathroom trips, no longer snore (sleep with my mouth closed), and have eliminated my nightime stuffiness.

The cpap machine supplies a steady flow of moist air through a nasal mask that I adapted to quite easily.

The whole point is that you might not have all of the usual symptoms of sleep apnea so keep an open mind and discuss it with your doctor.

You know that cozy, comfortable, perfectly relaxed 5 minutes you have in the morning after you've hit the snooze button for the first time? When the last thing you want to do is get out of your bed?

When I have a hard time falling asleep, I just remember how that feels and try to put myself in that state of mind.

Lie down. Don't talk or think. Close your eyes. Feel the coolness and comfort of your sheets, your pillow, your mattress. This place is wonderful, feel it, drink it in.

Leave for tomorrow that which belongs to tomorrow. You have done what you can for today.

Good night.

Try not to go to bed with an heavy stomach, then aviod thinking of anything cos most times persons due to their very busy day tend to use their resting time for analyse every activity that took place or other issues that are could be disturbing ones mind.

I am 61 and have always had good sleep habits. On rare occasions I do wake up and have not been able to sleep good, but that is rare. Usually when I go to bed I fall asleep withing the first couple of minutes. If I am having difficulty I use deep breathing techniques and before I am finished using these techniques I fall asleep. Another technique I use if my mind is racing is a combination of shutting off all the thought going through my mind and my deep breathing at the same time, this also works together because I can't think of a hundred other things and focus on my breathing at the same time.
