Ouch! How to Make Shots Less Painful for Kids

Well Let's say I have a 12 year old who is super scared but I think any of this isn't necessary ! Are there more subtle ways to reduce pain without me feeling like I'm babying her? And if she needs a shot how do I approach the doctor with asking if she has to get a shot?
