This has been an issue for a number of years now, and the scale of the problem is not fully appreciated. Teens spend over 20 hours a week online, on average! Fortunately tools like iFreeFace http://www.ifreeface.com can help teens to limit time spent online without being over-controlling or patronising.

Kids with ADHD are also more prone to overusing the Internet, video games, TV -- which all provide stimulation to an understimulated brain.

So, it's important to make that distinction and to point out that association is not causation. Moreover, what they call "depression" in China might very well be related to untreated ADHD, not to mention the hazards of "self-medicating" ADHD with chronic use of electronic devices.

The last I heard, the only screening done for children with ADHD is to send children identified as such to the factories instead of the schools.

This growing dependence on the "use" of the Internet for "information" or "schooling" -- you can give that functional dependence any name you wish -- completely side steps one principal questionable issue: the VERACITY of that which you read! Any individual, educated or not, can type anything at any time without bearing responsibility for the information presented. If you stand on a street corner holding a sign that the writer of this particular note is -- using any derogatory language you wish -- that defamation, if false, is grounds for a "law-suit" in our legal system. If that occurs on the "web" -- even if you could determine the computer from which the "defamation" originated -- you cannot determine whose fingers were on the keys that typed the information. The usual restrictions that our legal system provides, offers absolutely no protection against such behavior on the world-wide-web!

This attorney, now long retired from the court-room, knows only too well. how such irresponsible use of language can do harm! Seriously, think about it!
