Would testing the DNA of grandparents of autistic children help the research?

Ken of NJ 1:18PM August 15, 2011

Interesting that you should mention the chemicals all around us. I firmly believe that the well water that I drank while pregnant with my son contributed to his diagnosis. There is a rock quarry next door where extensive blasting took place over many years when I was a child and still has blasting going on today. I believe that this has contaminated the underground water system which feeds the well. I also understand that there are other factors that play into this diagnosis.

One can only wonder what the pill is and has done to American Children? A chemical that completely alters a woman's natural function. This along with thousands upon thousands of new chemicals used all over. Is autism plaguing poor nations in Africa for instance? There was no such thing amongst my generation, in as much as all joungsters lived a very normal live, getting married and having a number of children, no artificial stuff at that time ot avoid pregnancy. The only chemicals we dealt with were the natural ones, period.

You make me laugh. If you paid any attention to both sides, and looked at some reliable material, you would know that vaccines are a major problem. Some spend time with the thousands of parents who saw their child health go in the toilet after a vaccination. Autism, seizures, and DEATH! these are some example of the side effects. take a look at www.nvic.org

and by the way, there is a huge vitamin D factor. So many of these kids are low in vitamin D.

Please though, do share with me where you are getting your proof that the vaccine connection is bunk. I would be glad to give you an education.

Hey vaccine guy! Yeah you in the comments down below. Don't even try to infer that autism has anything to do with vaccines! That's bunk, been bunk, over and over again bunk. It doesn't matter if 1000 Wakefields or Macarthys or Fire Marshal Bills say that there's a link, there isn't. The scientific community tested that hypothesis to death; there is no link!

Hey vitamin guy! Really? Just a vitamin D definiency. Come on. If that were true don't you think that the prenatal vitamin regiment that most women go on would have identified that already? Don't you think it's rather odd that the VITAMIN COUNCIL told you this? If you believe that one, there's a guy named Mathias Rath that would love to talk to you about your AIDS.

The world is full of idiots. Idiots that would love to whole heartedly accept nearly any tripe that's fed to them. Don't be an idiot.

Not to extrapolate in error or be presumptive, but merely as a thought exercise, if the majority of autism is found to be related to these genes, which were not inherited, what does that say about the potential causes? Could it be that all causes must happen then before birth? (take that Jenny Macarthy) What exactely does it mean to be a gene that isn't inherited, is some external stimulus causing a mutation or is it random? A predisposition towards repetition mutations? This research is, of course, far from difinitive, but it does point to some interesting questions. After all, how much of autism is autism and how much is just the unknown thrown in there for good measure? I wonder what Ben Goldacre thinks of this.

Not everyone wants a cure, but not everyone rejects the idea completely.

As for myself, I believe in alleviating the sensory issues (the issues, not the differences) and changing (hopefully) the teaching culture. Respect different opinions, please!

There was a recent report re vaccines that today's vaccines differ in a way from the old vaccines of the days when today's boomers were little tykes. It was reported that material from aborted fetuses have been included in the manufacture of some vaccines. This material may or may not be necessary in the manufacture of vaccines, and it may or may not be a good thing.

Another suggestion re autism is to take note of how many and which medicines mothers-to-be ingest. What a mother ingests goes straight to the baby. Medicines may or may not hurt the baby.
