You could fill a thimble with all of the Compassion that is coming from Karen, Anosophie and Bill. I wonder if any of them would consider themselves Christian. No, I am not looking to talk religion. But I can't help but notice how our Culture which prides itself on being based on Christian (or Judeo-Christian) values seems to be sorely lacking in Compassion.

I have two Children. I'm not irresponsible. I'm not overpopulating the world, I work hard to reduce my (our) Carbon footprint. If you want to talk overpopulation it is a Complete non issue in the US.

The prevailing Culture in our Country is sorely lacking Compassion. We need to start supporting mothers and fathers who work hard to raise their Children. Paid maternity leave is not paving the road to Communism. It is just a human, Compassionate, Common sense solution.

All of the folks out there who want to do nothing to support the parents (and therefore, the children) need to realize that Community and Compassion do not equal Communism.

Normally, I would agree with this sentiment for better family-friendly policies. However, I have seen for myself after living overseas how the best intentions go awry. I saw high monthly stipends act as motivations for young women to drop out of school and have children out of wedlock. And staying home to raise children becomes so important that businesses were actually being hurt with state-mandated policies that allowed excessive 'time off' which in turn hurts the business, and the economy.

And once the state becomes so financially involved in childrearing, it's just a hop, skip and a jump to the nightmare of state control of your child. No joke- I've seen it happen. Balance is the key. And sorry, but sacrifice is part of being a good parent. No, you can't always have it all...at least not all at the same time.

The war is being waged against all of us...not just working moms. With the world the way it is today, having a child is 1) irresponsible 2) selfish 3) immature. If you've brought a new human being on to the planet in the last 10 years, you've made the #1 problem we face even worse: over population. Really, I'm sorry for all of us who are struggling "to get it right" and "do it all"...if you think living in this time is harder on you because you have kids, get over it. Your choice, your consequence.

"You studied how motherhood works in different countries, and said women elsewhere have a much easier time of it, thanks to family-friendly government policies."

Do we really need more government intrusion into or businesses and our lives? I think not. Doesn't seem to be working very well in Socialist Europe.

This is so true, and I will buy this book. I am not a mother yet, I'm a married graduate student wondering about what I will do when I get pregnant, do I stay home? Do I work? will i have a choice? It's hard. I spent much time abroad and the US system sucks the worst out of any developed nation (well Japan's kinda sucks too). Why is it women here do not band together and change this? I wonder this all the time, is it the capitalist system that is willing to grind for every penny, or apathy, or maybe from too many TV and other non-reality sources claiming women can "do it all"? I want to be a full time mother and yet my family and friends will hear none of it, go to school get a job and be a modern woman - they say. Personally my (future) children are whats most precious to me.
