I appreciate this article. My child is inundated with juice boxes at every birthday party and soccer practice. We have a rule that juice is only for special occasions. Early on, I developed a water habit with her. Thankfully, she asks for water before she asks for anything else.

Fruit is a great snack for a child and so are vegetables. How are they supposed to get their vitamins and minerals? Fruit has a lot of calories for energy so I think you need to reconsider this post.

Wow. I agree with the point that school lunches just suck, and, yes, a bag of chips, cookies, and maybe some candy is way too much for snacks. Kids should have a sense of healthyness, but fruit for snack??? How do you expect to get any energy from fruit?? I dont think that is fullfilling until dinnertime. Kids need calories to grow and do activities. Listen up, you may be watching your weight, but dieting your kid isn't the way to go. Let them be a kid, but yes, limit their junk intake and encourage healthy choices. Plus, because you people are telling ALL kids they're obese, normal size kids think they are fat, which ends up with an aful eating disorder. Thats my veiw.

The key is MODERATION!! If you study the eating habits of truly healthy people, it involves give-and-take. Remain conscious, but do not go overboard. Meatloaf and potatoes for lunch? Then have a great grilled chicken salad for dinner. My children are allowed candy, chips, cookies in moderation. I also keep plenty of fresh fruit and granola bars. They are healty and active and are both of normal weight. As school lunches go, I watch the menu carefully. If I feel there is too much grease this week, I'll let them pick 2 days to eat in the lunchroom, and I'll send lunch for the other 3.

So you would rather have your kids teased and made fun of. Feeling bad about going to the pool, not being able to climb stairs and spending half of their earnings as adults on medical bills and different medicines to keep their bodies functioning? It's not about being skinny, it's about being healthy. My family started making changes a year ago and we are losing weight SLOWLY, but we are much happier. We no longer sit in front of the TV. Kids can be fun, once you clean out the JUNK from their systems. You can't say something doesn't work if you've never tried it. Glad I'm not your child.

You two must be obese kids yourselves, desperate to keep that bag of chips by your sides. No responsible adult would write these comments. You've got to be kidding. 70 percent of all 12 year olds are already showing the beginning signs of heart disease, hardening of the arteries. Adult onset diabetes is no longer, it is now a childhoood disease and rampant. Something has to change or we are going to start seeing life expectancy decrease in this country.

O.K. let's starve the kids, we will only get unhappy emo skinny kids, that will hate us forever! Imagine a kid's life without TV, soda, snacks, candies etc etc... That's pretty much child abusing, and it will afflict kid's later life, as it will be really hard for them to integrate in the society, because of the snobbish habits we force them to learn. We live in the real life, we drink soda, fries and junk food, we play couch-potato and so on, and it will be just hypocrite of us to force kids into something unnatural. Humans are predators, carnivores, and they prey and feed. No snobbish magazines or governmental program will ever change that!!!
