They didn't study that, though, did they? Many "scientific" studies are fatally flawed in this regard: the study groups themselves are often in error or too limited in scope.

According to your statement, it's no doubt that mum should do s.th to the children. As a student, we are sufferred lots of affaction from our life which certainly contain much bad influence. Therefore, it is significantly indispensible to require our adults have a good and suitable behavior.

It could be that parents with ADHD are more likely to smoke as a way to self-medicate their ADHD symptoms. We do know that teens and adults with ADHD are more likely to use alcohol and drugs, and in many adults with ADHD, if the ADHD is addressed, then the drinking can be dealt with, not in the reverse order. We know that ADHD runs in families, so if the mom and dad have it, it is more likely that the child will inherit it. Maybe the smoking is not causative, but rather, just a offshoot of the condition.
