I thought you and your community might be interested in a clinical research study now enrolling people with a past head injury who feel sleepy during the day. This study is going on at various centers around the US; go to this website for more information: http://www.headsleepstudy.com/.

The latest research peer reviewed by the Academy of Sports Dentistry and a Harvard MGH specialist, suggests a retainer like Mouth guard used in the NFL and with such programs as the University of Texas, should be considered as part of a return to play protocol. One concussion and your six times more likely to have another, this protocol identifies and corrects a known link to the concussion origin. www.mahercor.com

I'm now 28, and played competitive soccer for over 15 years. I've had 6 (by my count) concussions over that time period and have yet to experience any lingering side effects. Only time will tell, but I encourage parents to stress caution as well as be supportive in their kids' sporting endeavours. Without a soccer scholarship, I never would have gotten the advanced degrees and career opportunities I've been lucky to achieve. Safety is paramount, but research has yet to support long term problems related to concussions.

I have had three concussions, so this information was of much interest to me. I had a mild concussion at 25 that left me with chronic cluster headaches. A moderate/severe concussion at about 47 (couldn't think straight for 6 months). That was caused by getting hit by a car, flying through the air, and landing on my head. The third was at 49 and mild. I seem to be just fine. Dunno if these will have long term effects. Apparently medical science does not know either.

Blows to the jaw are the majority of concussion origin, one of the leading experts has now confirmed this.

Dr. Robert Cantu. Cantu related to Bergeron that “99 percent” of NHL players would have similarly suffered a significant concussion in the manner of collision that saw the side of Bergeron’s face smack into the unforgiving shoulder pads of Dennis Seidenberg with such violent force.

Parents need to seek a proven means of concussion prevention. No mouth guard corrects diagnosble cartiage damage. Only a procedure used by the N.E.Patriots has a distinct evaluation that pinpoints a known cause of concussion and its symptoms. Go to www.mahercor.com for more info
