The PSA Test: 7 Reasons It Still Matters

At last a sensible discussion of the value of prostate screening! In 2004, the PSA test result was the only warning that I had of highly aggressive (Gleason 9) prostate cancer. It wasn't that high either, just 5.1. My urologist followed it up with an ultrasound scan which showed a suspicious shadow.

I was treated (IMRT external radiation plus hormone suppression) and well over five years later, there is still no sign of recurrence and my PSA is low (0.2) and steady. In fact, my oncologist - who does not make frivolous statements - is on the verge of calling me cancer-free.

I was almost 75 years old when diagnosed in 2004. Without that timely treatment, I would be long gone by now. The PSA test saved my life.
