Celiac Disease in Men Threatens Bone Health

It remains extremely troubling that physicians are still unable to affirmatively diagnosis Celiac Sprue as of 2012. I have had it all my life and am 55 now. Yes, it is without doubt President Kennedy suffered it and that his saving grace was daily steroid use, without which he would have very probably been so disabled by it he couldn't work even as a politician. I have the osteoporosis and that nails it. Anyone looking for diagnostic resources I feel would do well to visit www.intestinalhealthinsitute.com and deal with Dr. Fine--ironically in Dallas, Texas, the city where JFK was assassinated. He is leading the way in at least pointing the way toward good testing and timely recognition of Celiac. It is vital, but because only 1% of Americans have Celiac--although this is a much higher rate than medicine initially thought--it still is a minority, and minorities are usually beaten by majorities in recognition of validity, no matter how anyone slices it, but I can tell anyone, daily clinical malnutrition is too heavy a price to pay for continued ignorance.

Steroids, given for "Addison's Disease"--which JFK never had--stop autoimmune disease dead in its tracks, which is the basic nature of Celiac disease.

Yes, "it was reported that JFK devloped Addison's Disease after excessive treatment with sterois", but this is based on the fact that the adrenals, even under normal output without such treatment, reduce steroid output as per normal hormonal feedback compensation when steroids are taken. JFK developed signs of adrenal insuficiency when he forgot his medication on an overseas trip once, which was the normal thing to be expected under the circumstances and in no way proved he had Addison's Disease. Celiac is much more indicated and in fact provable with his overall medical history.

I have Celiac disease that was undiagnosed for 45 years of my male life and untreated in any fashion until that time. The other part of this story which causes my own personal interest is that my late father personally nominated John F. Kennedy as a delegate to the 1960 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, and it was through my father's line(Irish) I got the genes associated with Celiac.

Nicely written article.

Thanks for making the public aware of this autoimmune disorder.

As a biopsy diagnosed male with celiac disease its nice to see truthful articles that inform the public of the evils of gluten and the destructiveness of this disease on the human body.

It was reported that John F. Kennedy developed Addison's Disease after excessive treatment for his colitis with medication, namely cortical steroids, which was a new drug at that time.
