One additional reason a doctor may not refer a prostate patient to protons is there is a limited capacity for treatment. One day after listening to someone at Loma Linda saying they were encouraging competition to enter into this treatment space I was surprised they wanted competition. Then I thought about it. If you take all the patients treated with protons for prostate cancer in one year it is in very rough numbers around 2,500 to maybe 3,000 patients - 1% to 2% of the diagnosed patients.

The odds of any one prostate patient being treated by protons is very low.
