I am 41 years old and have been a Type I diabetic since I was two years old. I struggled with bulimia from 1986-1994. It is very comforting to know that now it is called Diabulimia. I almost died from this horrible illness. Luckily my friends and family pulled together and got me into treatment. I have been in recovery for 15 years. Since diabetes focuses constantly on discipline towards food it is very easy to get caught in this vicious trap. I encourage anyone who is struggling with this disease to immediately seek help before death becomes your result. It is possible to recover!!! I am living proof and my diabetes is well controlled!!! I am married and have two very healthy boys. I thank my Lord for getting me through this!!!!!

Thank you for sharing this information. I have been diagnosed with Eating Disorder NOS, but now that people are using the term "Diabulimia," I know that is what I truly struggle with. I am fighting it with every meal, every dose of insulin and ever minute of the day. I am 37 years old, have severe bilateral diabetic neuropathy, microaneurysms in my eyes, and some kidney damage. I have lost 3 inches in height due to malnutrition and will never get that back.

I am attempting to get my story of struggle and survival out to others that are facing these issues. I pray that one day, girls/women and boys/men will love their bodies enough to nourish it with healthy habits instead of these.

Again, thank you very much.

Thank you for bringing attention to a devastating condition. My daughter and I have authored a blog, www.abbeducated.info, in hopes of garnering widespread attention on Diabulimia. Our hope is that healthcare professionals will begin to incorporate information about diabulimia in all diabetic educational classes, especially classes for newly diagnosed teenage girls..
