I don't see anything wrong with nursing homes but i strongly encourage family members to think of home care first for their loved ones.

Many people move to nursing homes believing that there is not choice. This usually happens after many months of trying to coordinate homecare, burn-out by the family or after a "triggering event" such as a broken hip or a stroke.... In California (one of the most expensive states for nursing home care) a new model is being formed - Assisted Living at Home. The firt of these companies is caled Living Well - based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The founders of this model believe strongly that they can provide all the support of a nursing home or asssisted living community, while allowing the elder to remain in their own home. At this point, their option is only available for those that have sufficient means to pay the assisted living or CCRC rates and who live in urban areas - but, down the road, this could prove to be cost saving for all people.

In response to Jaye of IA: Determining what kind of setting and care is appropriate for your elderly loved one is a very individual decision just like choosing a child care provider for your little one. No one setting or type of service will meet the preferences and needs of every person. Careful screening, frequent revisits and monitoring, open communication between the provider and the family are all essential when you pay someone to care for your loved one. There are advantages to all types of care for older adults and all are not created equal. Don't downplay the services of a nursing home and the caregivers who work very hard to take good CARE of those they serve. Nursing homes are HOMES and can give people the sense of community they may have been lacking in recent years due to isolation and lack of social engagement with their peers. In general, Iowans tend to step up to help others and do what's best for those involved. Take time to visit your local nursing home and see how you can get involved there to enhance the lives of seniors.

I live in Iowa. We also have many programs and helps for people to stay in their own home too. I would strongly encourage a family to think of home care first before placing a loved one in a nursing home.
