6 Fitness Splurges Worth the Money

I know that P90X folks probably come out of the woodwork for articles like this one, but I bought P90X for $120, paid about another $100 initially for resistance bands, pullup bar, yoga mat, and yoga blocks, and probably spent about another $100 on selected weights throughout the next 6 months, and in the process dropped three pants sizes, lost 15 pounds, went from 20% body fat to around 14%, put on muscle, dropped my resting heart rate by 10 points, and gained an overall level of fitness I had not had in over 10 years. I increased muscle, better cardio conditioning, and flexibility through yoga. Not bad for the initial $220 and just over $300 in that first year. Overall, I have probably spent about $500 on programs and equipment over the last two years, and I did it all in the comfort and temperature control of my home. Not a bad investment.

You cannot find an Elliptical that will fit and/or last for $500.

You would be better off using kettlebells (find an very good instructor)TRX and ropes.

No maintenance, and the most efficient way to get in shape...bar none.

That is the funniest thing I have ever heard. It would be great to have though. I currently sit most of the day and it is killing me (now I know I was on to something there). I agree completely with the home gym. I do all my workouts from home and can listen to my music without headphones. And I save a bunch in gym membership costs.

I use the iMapMyRun+ iPhone app and it works just like a GPS device. Even better it syncs automatically with your account at beta.mapmyrun.com so you have a comprehensive workout history. They also just launched a newer version of the app that is compatible with ANT+ so the app now records your heart rate and other data if you have the sensor. Much more cost effective than buying a Garmin and easier to use and track your workouts.

I got an NGR Travel Gym at www.ngrfit.com and though it wasn't much of a "splurge" it was really worth it! Also got micoach at www.micoach.com (Adidas made tracking software) which works of phones with GPS's and is free. Can't beat that price!

Anyways - great list~!
