I'm on a track and field team and a couple months ago it seemed that all our members were suffering from aches and paines related to running. We had heard about the barefoot running movement and decided to try it out. We started practicing on grass and running barefoot. I am proud to say that our injury rate has decreased dramatically. Barefoot running can change your whole approach to running.

I walk my dogs barefoot every day; our walk is between 2 and 4 miles. Our route is a mix of tarmac, concrete and gravel. I have no problem walking on gravel, I actually like the texture of some gravel although I avoid larger gravel and rocks. I've found that my gait is completely different and it feels much more natural.

These are great tips, it is definitely best to take it slow, utilizing minimalist running shoes and not running for long distances at the beginning. Just because our bodies were made to run barefoot doesn't mean we don't have to re-teach ourselves to run in this style. I learned some great barefoot running techniques for beginners from Lee Saxby who taught Chris McDougall, writer of the book "Born to Run." Check it out with video. http://www.seriousrunning.com/blog/health/minimalist-running-techniques-and-instructions/
