Our environment is selecting tomorrow's humans whose parents survive today's hazards. Perhaps they will be the children and grandchildren of great beer drinkers. Question: Do city dwellers live longer than rural residents?

I'll have a drink to that.

All the same. My bad.

So if you drink a liter of beer you may ingest 19-60mg of silica (not silicon btw) I think I'll take my silica with broccoli, thanks. It's researchers churning these types of health stories that grab headlines but confuse the issue of nutrition. People read beer has benefits and proceed with gusto.

We have read about the numerous benefits of moderate alcohol consumption and it always gets a lot of hits I'm sure. My opinion is that there is still not enough written about what a well rounded diet of whole foods can do to prevent the many chronic ailments of the fast food nation. Read Michael Pollan's "In Defense of Food" to see an interesting analysis of the vitamin/mineral supplement boosters.

I compliment Ms. Hobson for writing about these issues and stating the facts, I'm less impressed with university studies that go for headlines instead of making headway.

Who cares? Just hoist your brew and enjoy!

"The caveat to all this is that there's no direct evidence that drinking causes the benefits that have been observed, just that people who drink moderately also seem to be in better health."

This is the author, Katherine Hobson. The story clearly says the new study offers no such link.
