‘Whole Food’ Vitamins Are a Cool Idea, But Proof of Benefit Is Lacking

hmmm, interesting article i have contacted new chapter and mega foods and they both have stated they have no proof of any difference between "whole food" and synthetic vitamins. How can anyone claim that they can take what nature has produced and PUT THEM INTO A PILL OR POWDER? WHAT A PERSON SHOULD CONSIDER IS THAT THEIR IS A DIFFERENCE IN THE SYNTHETICAl FORM AND THAT ONE SHOULD RESEARCH THAT. GO TO BEYOND HEALTH.COM AND LEARN FROM A CHEMIST AND NOT FROM HYPE.

The reason research gets little or no results is because not enough of the target vitamin is ever used to effect a positive result. The Recommended Daily dose is a bare minimum. So just keep telling us to not take charge of our own health, keep dosing people with chemicals and pretty soon we won't be around to complain anymore.

A "lack of proof" is proof only of how remiss and capitalistically-influenced science is in the USA. Do you realize how much money is made by the unethical, toxic supplement industry? Do you think they are going to fund studies that prove how ineffective, and even harmful, the junk they peddle is? If so, you must also think the FDA is competent and looking out for your best interests, too. Hilarious!

If you want nourishing, non-toxic vitamins, find some comprised of whole foods and zero additives, preservatives or fillers. Good luck with that (I've found only one: Vita Synergy. Whereas the other "whole food" purveyors like MegaFood, New Chapter, etc have fillers)

It seems to me that herbal remedies, organic foods, and whole food vitamins are the wave of the future. People are just tired of being told what to do and basically "drugged" to death by the "establishment". I recently ran into this one article that really does a good job of spelling it out. It is too long to post here, but here is a link: http://my-herbal-remedies.com/herbal-medicine.atcl

A few things... First, the article quotes and internist. It would astound most people to find out how little medical doctors know about nutrition. They are not trained or educated in this field yet are asked their opinions as if they are gods. Second, there is a distinction to be made between whole food based and actually whole foods. "based" means there could be a mixture of foods and isolates. In the case of New Chapter, the food isn't even grown under natural conditions. STandard Process touts whole foods yet mixes them with isolates such as ascorbic acid, pyroxine and vitamin A palmitate, to name a few. NutriPlex formulas (nutriplexformulas.com) actually offers whole food supplements grown under the sun and in the soil without any chemicals or isolates. Lastly, vitamins are produced by drug companies. Merely do some research and you'll see that these are just chemicals and not nutrients.

@ Amritakripa

The best proof of any product is not how it makes you feel. The best proof is how well it performs in a study where participants don't know whether they are taking the drug, pill, etc. or are taking a placebo.

@ Tara

You are anecdotal evidence; not living proof.

Thanks so much for your well considered article. I started using MegaFood whole food products 12 years ago when i was pregnant. I was so impressed with the results of the product that a began working with the company a little over a year later and have been with them for 10 years. In that time i have had the good fortune of speaking to thousands of consumers who have noticed tangible benefits when they switch to a whole food supplement. I have found it interesting, for example, that Blood Builder, which is the MegaFood iron supplement, has become so popular based on both its gentleness on the stomach and its effectiveness. Iron deficiency anemia is easy to test for and remedy. The problem for many people is that they are unable to tolerate most of the isolated forms of iron. When they switch to the MegaFood product they report a very positive experience without the problems. This is just one example that points to the benefits of nutrients delivered in a whole food form.

At the end of the day i believe that the best proof of any product is the way it makes you feel - i encourage people to really pay attention to their own body so as not to be too overwhelmed by hype and marketing.

In the year since I have been taking whole food vitamins and supplements I have not been sick once...Not even a cold!!! Before I would get sick at least once a season... I am living proof! I don't even exercise and eat perfectly!
