Which Yogurts Have Vitamin D? These 17 Yogurt Products Do

As far as I understand, milk contains a fat soluble sterol, which when irradiated with UV light is photochemically converted into vitamin D. This is how commercial milk is fortified with vitamin D (and that is how the bone disease rickets was eliminated in the first half of the 20th C--or at least that is the case according to Wikipedia!) So. it would seem to me that irradiating milk products would be a great way to increase Vitamin D content. I do not drink milk--so I appreciate your list of yogurts with vit D. I recently wrote a letter to chobani asking about vit D supplementation.

How come there is no vitamin D in your greek oikos yogurt, and why doesn't it come in a lowfat style? It's really good and creamy, but with Vitamin D and lowfat it would be perfect. I guess you can't please everyone.

If you make your own yogurt with store bought Vit D enriched milk then an 8-oz serving of your homemade yogurt will contain the 25% (100 IUs) of Vit D that the milk going into the yogurt contains and the best thing is that you will have only the milk and the added yogurt cultures in your yogurt - no preservatives, additives, gelatin, etc that many name brand yogurts contain!

Al- vitamin d is ADDED to milk. it is not contained naturally in fluid milk. so whether or not they add it to yogurt is up to the manufacturer. So if you make your own yogurt with milk it would have some.

If Vitamin D is to be present in yogurts, then what makes those yogurts which may not carry D. Is that the process the way yogurt is made (what is that process). If milk contains D why would D disappear during making of any kind of yogurt. Any expert or chemist would be helpful to explain this.

Also, the Researchers ignored to mention the other sources of D from vegitables and fruits, so I heard. Al

Katherine, are you sure you got the numbers right? The Fred Meyer Lite yogurt I've been eating lists Vitamin D as 25%, just like milk. Don't know about other brands, but your numbers seem awfully low.

Katherine Hobson: I assumed that all would have 25% too, but it wasn't the case. I didn't check store brands because they are so local, but the national brands definitely vary and seem to range from 0% to 30%. Check out the company websites and you can see for yourself!
