I was hearing cracking noises in my knees when climbing stairs, until I started a program of regular swimming. Wearing swim fins and using a flutter kick while in side stroke position without stroking with the arms made the noise go away. I use leg machines in the gym and a stationary bike at home. Notice it's all no impact training. Running is ok for young people if done properly, but at my age (64) I avoid running.

What I like most about this post is that it points out how strength training and exercise help us stay healthy and not just "physically attractive". Building strong muscles protects our vital organs, our spinal column, and helps us perform our everyday activities with ease. PART of the reason so many elderly people are unable to do everyday activities is because they have become inactive and sedentary due to arthritis or other health related problems, and in turn their muscles begin to atrophy.

But I tell my clients that there is a hope for everyone. Even if it is a client n a wheelchair--there are exercises he or she can do to better their current physical condition and attitude toward life.

So, stay fit, stay active, and stay positive!
