Well, that makes sense. The way the example reads is 1/2 hour of high vs. low intensity. But if you can continue for another half hour at low intensity, you've burned up 240 cal worth of fat vs. the 140 you burned before you dropped over from a heart attack on the high intensity workout. The important thing is that at the lower intensity, a greater proportion of your effort goes towards burning fat and you can do it for longer. There also may be some evidence that working out in the fat burning zone 'teaches' your body to rely more on fat for energy needs. Whatever mechanism it is that allows you to draw on fat reserves becomes more efficient.

An interesting discussion is price comment. I believe that it is best to write more on this matter, it won't be a taboo subject however typically individuals are not sufficient to talk on such topics. To the next. Cheers.

In response to the post exercise burn, your body cannot convert lipids to glucose or glycogen to replenish the glycogen stores. The glycogen has to be replenished by the carbs you eat or protein from diet or muscle mass.

A point I do not see mentioned in articles trying to bust the misconceptions of the fat burning zone is the fact that the body re-distributes fat and carbohydrate in hours to days after exercise. So, in the example of high intensity exercise for an hour, where carbo burning may be 70% vs 30% fat, and the total rate is 800 kcal per hour, the person loses 240 kcal worth of fat during the exercise, but they also deplete their muscle of glycogen stores. So, the body will burn fat in the post exercise period to replenish those stores. That is why it is the total calories burned that is important, not the % fat burned during the exercise.
