However, I can actually burn 1200-1500 in 2 hours about 6 days per week by doing low intensity workouts on a recumbent stationary bike. And if the last 30 minutes of the 2 hours session I turn into high intensity, then the number of calories burned will be a lot higher. But, I may not be able to perform 6 days per week. So, I conclude that it is better to exercise in the fat burning zone because it allows you to put in lots of hours into exercising and toward the goal of losing weight.

Well, that makes sense. The way the example reads is 1/2 hour of high vs. low intensity. But if you can continue for another half hour at low intensity, you've burned up 240 cal worth of fat vs. the 140 you burned before you dropped over from a heart attack on the high intensity workout. The important thing is that at the lower intensity, a greater proportion of your effort goes towards burning fat and you can do it for longer. There also may be some evidence that working out in the fat burning zone 'teaches' your body to rely more on fat for energy needs. Whatever mechanism it is that allows you to draw on fat reserves becomes more efficient.
