I AM A PILATES TEACHER AND I SEE A LOT OF COUPLES AND BUSINESS PARTNERS. IT'S FUN HAVING THEM WORK OUT TOGETHER AND I LEARN A LOT ABOUT EACH CLIENT FROM THEIR PARTNER, THINGS THAT HELP ME DO MY JOB BETTER. THE ONE AREA I ENCOURAGE MY CLIENTS TO STAY AWAY FROM IS PUTTING ME IN THE MIDDLE. OFTEN PEOPLE TAKE OUT THEIR "STUFF" ON EACH OTHER BY TRYING TO GET ME, THE TRAINER, TO TAKE SIDES. IT STARTS INNOCENTLY BY GETTING ME TO POINT OUT TO THE OTHER PERSON HOW THEY ARE DOING THE EXERCISE WRONG, THEN IT EVOLVES TO MORE PERSONAL ISSUES. I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PREDICT A BREAK UP (PERSONAL AND BUSINESS) A MILE AWAY BY HOW MY CLIENTS WORKOUT TOGETHER.

MY ADVICE, LEARN TO FOCUS ON THE WORKOUT AND YOUR OWN INDIVIDUAL PROGRESS. THE POINT OF A WORKOUT BUDDY IS TO GET YOU THERE AND KEEP YOU THERE FOR THE WHOLE WORKOUT, NOT TO TELL THEM HOW TO DO IT OR TO COMPETE WITH ONE ANOTHER.

I think training w/a significant other can be a good thing if one is willing to be pushed and the other is motivational enough. Better, yet, if the roles are interchangeable among partners. I think exercise is a great way to bond with your partner and accomplish things together!
