Diet Soda, Metabolic Syndrome, and Weight Loss

I like that you pointed out how association does not necessarily mean causation. Too many times health articles say things such as 'the consumption of X correlates with heightened chances of health risk Y,' and too many times readers will think that consumption of X actually causes health risk Y, when that might not be the case at all.

I really like your point about having a conscious calorie reduction plan. It is interesting to compare human tendencies to those of rats. It makes sense that the sweetness-calories link phenomenon would cause rats to overeat; however, I am not convinced it would create the same effect in humans who have caloric information generally at their fingertips. And even if a person might not be cognizant of the actual number of calories they consume, I'm pretty sure they are aware that eating a giant piece of chocolate cake is high in calories, and thus would lead to weight gain.

Other health articles never seem to provide the whole story. Diet soda doesn't cause weight gain--people cause weight gain!

Right on, sister. Great article.

That’s a very good point there. I made a search on the topic and found many people will agree with your article.

You know I have heard the same and decided to cut out diet soda. I have now gained 20 pounds. I think instead of having my afternoon diet soda, I ate food. So know I am back on my diet coke and loving it

I was just happy to know someone else wondered about diet soda.I'm thinking while watching what you eat diet soda is still better then drinking the alternative.

thanks

the comment about the diet soda or foods is absoulty right I only drink diet and sweet& low and yet I am still overweight .I have allowed myself to think in the box that I am giving myself leeway on extra calories or food when I am not.

So what is the answer ? Eat more fruit ,but does it not have more sugar.

most people that drink diet soda do not diet and probably eat more unhealthy thinking that the diet soda gives them room to misbehave. so considering that most diet drinkers are fat and don't exercise the association does not link the substances to the syndrome.

Ants are attracted to sugar. The fact that they do not like diet soda in no way validates or invalidates its danger to humans. Also if you felt the need to poke your nose in the Rn's business why did you scold her about the coffee and not the smoking. Smoking causes proven damage to those who smoke and those around them.
