Love this. I have the book Lifting for Women by these two pros. I love lifting weights. I'm a hard gainer so muscle is what gives my body a sexy shape. Or else I'd be a twig and don't want that. People are always asking what I do. When I say, "I lift weights" There's gotta be more. Nope, just lifting. I feel rather sneaky like it's my "little secret". I've been lifting since I was 48. Am now 61 and younger than ever. I wish women would finally get it. I'm a fitness trainer now all my ladies are lifting and getting a shape instead of just a smaller version of themselves.

Due to some lifting ( furniture) I damaged my sciatica nerve and have 3 bone spurs and the cartilege is toast in the right knee. Steriods and the mandatory lack of exercise did its job, now I am pretty much 100lbs overweight. I stand 6ft 1in..pretty tall for a woman. Yet I want to do something to help myself get this weight off. I changed my diet, eating more lean meats and veggies. I just started walking, but if knee and back hurt at the same time..Im toast. At 51 yrs old, this is NOT how I want to live my life walking with a cane constantly in pain and over weight to boot.

Which strengthing exercises would you suggest for me?

The women who shouldn't be lifting either have a chronic injury or are easy gainers (which are 1% of all women).

Yes! Yes! Yes! Don't be afraid to lift weights. Work your way up to be able to go heavy and you will see results. I started out at 124 lbs 5'0" 38 year old. Before that was afraid to lift weights because of fear of bulk. Now, less than two years later I'm at 105lb at 40 years old. In the best shape of my life! Better than when I was 20. Excess fat started shedding when I actually started pushing weight overhead and practicing olympic lifts and deadlifting. You will actually start get really toned and proportioned for your size. And, don't forget to eat right! If you need help getting started, try to find a CrossFit affiliate near you!

I'v been a personal trainer for over 15 years and this article is great. More women need to be informed on the benefits of strength training and given some basic tools like these to implement an effective program. Also, the information on the interval training for cardio is very accurate.

I used to think I’ll develop big macho looking muscles from weight training. I read an article on http://www.female-workout.com/female-workout/4-myths-that-keep-women-from-weight-training. I could say I’m one of the women who think that way. I might try doing this weight lifting.
