This reminds me of how important it is for patients to engage their provider and ask lots of questions. Sounds like in this case there was a lot of guess work and unnecessary tests at the patient's expense, both physical and financial. The moral of the story in my mind is ask tons of questions. I found this video helpful: http://whatstherealcost.org/video.php?post=five-questions

I went in to the doctor with a skin pain just below my collar bone. For some reason, doctor suggested a mammogram. I thought that sounded wrong, since mammograms do not go up to the collarbone, and the pain was on my skin. On mammogram, they found a lump in sort of the breast/armpit area. I knew this was a swollen lymph node, as i have a history of getting those, have had them removed and always benign.

Doctor said it needed a biopsy. Biopsy went all wrong, he cut a blood vessel and a nerve. Ended up going to the ER by ambulance. Developed a huge hematoma on my side/armpit (looked like i had 3 softballs implanted under my skin).

Now (a month later) i still have the hematoma, cannot put my arm all the way down, cannot lift things at work, and have no feeling on the bottom side of my arm due to the nerve being cut.

Plus, monster medical bills now, including ER and ambulance.

The irritated skin under my collarbone never was addressed or looked at....
