K. J.'s Story

Septmeber 16, 2008, K.J. Phenezy turned 15 years young. K. J. is the only child of a single, business woman and they lived a great life. Their home sat on a hill overlooking beautiful city lights in San Diego County. Their property was full of flowers, fruits, palm trees with a lovely swimming pool and jacuzzi that they never used. K. J. had a theater room to play Xbox 360 with his friends, dogs, basketball, movie nights with friends and trips to the mall. K.J. was (and still is) a smart, happy, loving young man who stayed out of trouble.

K.J was a very healthy 15 y.o. He had never had the flu or even a flu shot. He hadn't required an antibiotic since he was a baby with an ear infection. As one of the star players on his basketball team, K.J. often played an entire game without resting. He was the epitome of health.

K.J. was finally ready to overcome his fear of the dentist so he could get braces for his teeth. On October 8, 2008, his mom took him to a local chain dentist in San Diego County. They placed two amalgams (a.k.a. silver fillings) in his right upper and lower molars. 3 days later, K.J. was ill with a fever of 102 - 102.9 for 3 days. His fever was accompained by chills and sweat. Except for the lack of mucus, it appeared as though K.J. had the flu.

It turned out that K.J.'s fever was a warning sign that something drastic was happening to his body. A few days after his fever broke, K.J. woke up with a swollen lip. The swell dissipated after a couple of hours. The next day it was a swollen jaw, then eyelid. The swelling began on the right side of his face where the new fillings were located. T. M. Phenezy (K.J.s Mom) asked the hospital to check for mercury poisoning. Recognizing the correlation, his mom took him to see his primary care doctor. She asked his doctor about the fillings, but her thoughts were quickly dismissed. She was told that silver fillings do not make people sick!

K.J.'s symptopms continued to escalate. By December 13, 2008, he was admitted to the children's hospital in San Diego. K.J. received 2 blood transfusions and numerous tests. T. M. Phenezy had researched the amalgams and found that they were primarily mercury, not silver. She found that there was undisputed and admitted evidence that the mercury leaks from the amalgam compound and enters the bloodstream. They tested his blood and did not find an elevated mercury level. NO MERCURY POISONING? What T. M. Phenezy did not know at the time was that a blood test is one of the least efficient ways to test for chronic mercury poisoning.

K.J. was finalyy diagnosed with lupus in December 08, Stage V nephritis (a kidney disease) in January 09 and by March 9, 2009, K.J. was in a wheel chair, diagnosed with neuropathy (nerve damage). His symptoms continued to escalate although K.J. was on the proper medication.

T. M. Phenezy (K.J.'s Mom and CEO of The National Patient Advocate Institute) began researching diligently. What she found shocked her. Amalgams were banned in other countries and Canada had placed restrictions on its use. The U.S. had never required the manufacturers to prove its safety. They were simply grandfathered in. She also found that some people lose the ability to excrete the mercury, so it gets stored in their tissues, causing more harm.

K.J.'s mercury fillings were safely removed on March 19, 2008. His rapid heartbeat of 135 in his sleep, photosentivity to light and severe mouth pain went away. Other symptoms improved, but he was still primarily in a wheel chair. The Children's Hospital of San Diego's doctors refused to consider the evidence and research. His mom decided to pack up, sell the home and try an out of state hospital. Any hospital that would listen!

On April 30, 2009, K.J was admitted into Lebonheur's Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. The once healthy 15 y.o. was frail due to losing 30 pounds. He lost that weight even on 60 - 120 mg of steroids a day. For 16 days, Lebonheur's tried all their conventional medicines for lupus, nephritis, and neuropathy. They poked, prodded and ran numerous labs. K.J. was getting weaker. He couldn't stand, walk, or roll over in bed. K.J. couldn't even wiggle his toes and he was no longer ticklish under his feet. The nerve damage was worse. They assigned him a physical therapist and an occupational therapist.

T. M. Phenezy inudated Lebonheurr's doctors with research every moment they were in the room. Some wouldn't listen, but she talked anyway. She was sure it was the mercury! On day 16, May 15, 2009, the Attending Physician entered the room and said that Lebonheur's Children's Hospital would treat K.J. for mercury poisoning. Lebonheur's hospital had never treated a patient for mercury poisoning due to amalgams, so they had to do a lot of research.

Ms. Phenezy was told not to expect any results. Chelation therapy for mercury poisoning began that evening and the very next morning, May 16, 2009, K.J. was able to stand with the aide of a bedside table! Miracle? May 17, 2009, K.J. was pushing his wheelchair down the hall. He continued to improve and was released to inpatient physical therapy to strenghten his muscles and walk without assistance again.

Today, according to hospital lab tests, K.J. is still fighting lupus, but miracoulsy has no signs of neuropathy. He also has no visual signs of lupus. Due to strong advocating, educating and research by T. M. Phenezy, her once seriously ailing son is walking, running, laughing and working on building new friendships in a new state.

"The fact that Hg vapor is released from dental amalgam restoration surfaces is no longer questioned.18,44-48 However, how to calculate a daily dose of Hg released from amalgam restorations Hg vapor measurement and then estimating body burden of Hg—especially brain burden is an unresolved debate.44,49-51"

JADA, Vol. 130, February 1999 pg 197

Dr. Palfrey, again, what is the guidance on permissible levels of Hg exposure from dental amalgam given there is still no means to measure it? Please review the 2006 transcript of the FDA hearing on dental amalgam and see that the gaps in data persist.

When is enough, enough??

All women who are thinking of becoming pregnant should get a test for heavy metals. Not only does mercury pass through the placenta, it is also found in mothers milk. I think children are being poisoned by their mothers, then poisoned again by vaccines containing thimersol (mercury).

I, along with many other victims of mercury poisoning from mercury fillings testified at the FDA hearing in 2006. It is from this meeting the FDA says the fillings are safe and only a few people have an allergic reaction. However, this is not what the Advisory Panel ruled at the meeting. They voted two times 13 to 7 to reject the FDA's opinion that the fillings were safe and that the FDA had provided sufficient evidence on which to base a safety decision.

The Advisory panel wanted to be recalled in order to hear more evidence. They felt the FDA had handpicked the studies for them to see, and they wanted access to more studies from varying medical research engines. However, instead of the FDA having more hearings, they only opened up their dockets for a comment period. They promised to post all these comments on their site, but out of approximately 2500 comments, only 243 were posted.

Then the FDA announced to the world on July 2009 that they had examined ALL the evidence (remember the Advisory Panel ruled the FDA had NOT provided them with enough information), and the fillings were safe except for a few people who had an allergic reaction to them.

So do not base your medical opinions on what the FDA rules. The Constitutional attorney Jonathan Emord has written a book on the FDA and how they violate the basic principles of freedom and democracy in our country since they answer to no one. His book is "The Rise of Tyranny, How Federal Agencies Abuse Power and Pose Risks to your Life and Liberty."

If you base your dental care decisions on FDA rulings and American Dental Association's Standards of Care, the risk to your life and health WILL be endangered.

To read a report on the FDA hearings in 2006, read testimonies taken from the FDA website and for links to all that happened there do a search for "Advisory Panel Rejects Amalgam Safety."

When I was a dental assistant any left over Amalgam filling after the dentist filled a tooth had to go into a special container, it was prohibited to throw into the trash. If Amalgam releases small amounts of mercury in a patient chewing and drinking liquids (according to the writer) then why is it too toxic to put into the garbage???

Karen Burns of NJ 1:30PM January 21, 2010

Conventional doctors are treating this "crime" by prescribing Prozac and Zoloft and other mind altering drugs to people suffering from depression, epilepsy, bi-polar disorder etc. They do blood and urine tests which are not indicative of the body burden people are experiencing. There are other tests which provide a true picture. I had picked up the habit of chewing gum and started getting sicker and sicker. My doctor told me it was all in my head and, of course, wanted to prescribe Prozac. I declined. My chiropractor suggested I get tested for mercury poisoning. This is something I would never have thought of doing as is the case with most people. According to conventional medicine our problems are textbook illnesses. I find it ironic that this is just being pushed under the rug, but then again, we know who is getting richer by continually misleading the public.

Catherine Cardoni of MI 1:20PM January 21, 2010

If mercury is safe then why was the fact that "silver" fillings are mostly mercury kept such a "trade secret" for so long? Why were dentists placed under a gag order not to reveal to their patients that the silver-colored fillings contained mercury? How can any M.D. claim that mercury is stable when mixed with other metals when in fact that's impossible? No level of mercury can be considered safe. Mercury certainly does vaporize out of the filling and is readily inhaled and absorbed into the body and this is a known and proven fact. Mercury is a dangerous neurotoxin and should never be placed in the mouth, injected or inhaled. Even the tiniest amount of mercury will cause bodily harm on some level. Dr. Palfrey is obviously very misinformed and misguided.

Betsy Sinkey of TX 1:11PM January 21, 2010

It's truly amazing to me that conventional medical "authorities" continue to find twisted and unsupportable conclusions about why we should continue to inject (vaccines)or install (amalgams) an extremely neurotoxic substance in the human body. To continue to use mercury in medicine or dentistry is worse than blood letting or trephination. Why are we, as medical professionals, still having this discussion? I just wish that it was lead we were discussing, as I doubt that there would be any argument about the merits of using lead in this same manner. Molecule for molecule, mercury is far more toxic than lead.

John L. Wilson, Jr., M.D. of NC 7:01AM January 21, 2010

Dr. Palfrey: The primary source of mercury in the general population is amalgam fillings. The mercury derived from fillings far exceeds published reference doses for mercury. Published studies associate mercury exposure with Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's Disease, multiple sclerosis, and amyiotrophic lateral sclerosis. It's a shame that uninformed physicians proliferate the myth of amalgam safety. It's not safe, and the public needs to know the facts about this product.
