EXCEPT in the case of Hirschsprung's Disease . . . more often can be diagnosed at birth through the "toddler years" (biopsy) but is rarely so in adulthood. Surgical intervention most successful depending upon the patient's age and extent of intestine involved. Absence of ganglia cells (nerve) to promote normal peristalisis (structural birth defect) can be surgically corrected by resection and/or colostomy. Initially fatal, with today's research and treatment, successful outcomes in correction/management for leading a full life are the norm.
