I believe those investigation need to be more in detailed, not looking at paper work only, they need to go undercover and check from administration down to bedside nurses ( RN, LPN, and nursing assistant, because, nusing home have some forms called Dr. Telephone orders which serve as a mean to charge Medicare and Medicaid, and sometimes the nurses never talk to the Dr. however the nurses sign the orders, also Nurses ordering medication over the counter and other medications as well as dietitians.

There are only about 1 to 2% of workers in a nursing home that are "top". The rest are there for a pay check and have little concern about the feelings of their residents. I am doing research on a daily basis at remembering4you.com and can speak from experience on this matter. Evaluations are often received when family members or residents are vulnerable or afraid to say anything negative about the services. The fear is based on loosing the much needed services. Most people cannot stay at home when they get older or if they find they have advanced Alzheimer's. I often am asked to take a survey on the services my husband receives and I am always honest with my feedback.

Your article is nothing but a fluff piece. From first-hand experience I know that one of the facilities you give a top rating to has either misrepresented, misreported, or outright lied on the information they 'self-reported' to CMS. Since our state's DSHS is a poor example of how to run 'by the rules' it's no wonder a facility that can't run by the rules, and doesn't even know the rules, can make it onto your top performers' list. Sad day all around. I wouldn't trust the remainder of the information in your piece.

The last paragraph above is the most important information in this article. A visit to the nursing home is the best way of all to determine how residents are treated. Walk in unannounced and ask for a tour. Observe how staff interact with the resident and with each other. A quiet environment is not necessarily a great thing because these residents are not "sitting waiting to die" rather they are "living day to day" and most homes, like ours, have much for them to do to stay physically, mentally, and spiritually active. Most of us who work with the residents love them and love what we do. And when that is the prevailing attitude, it shows...and you'll feel it when you walk in!
