Good tips! Shopping around is also a good idea. Research and compare various quotes (ex: http://www.completelongtermcare.com/quote.aspx ). Because premiums vary greatly from company to company, be sure to get quotes from different carriers.

I am looking to buy my first car and have been researching car insurance at the same time. My older brother has told me that I could just go with the same company that he has. But he admitted that he doesn't know that much about other companies and what they offer. He just got the same coverage that our parents got. I am researching which company in the Fremont area is the best. So far I am thinking www.campusinsurance.com is the best.

This is in response to both folks that commented on Long Term Care Insurance. I work in the insurance industry and sell LTC often. I have seen people who are in situations like yourself who bought it when they were younger because it is less expensive. I am sorry that the agent who set you up with your plan was dishonest in telling you your premiums would never go up. I chose to be in the insurance industry because I have seen how it helps people. I have seen families loose loved one's who are also the "bread winner" and seen the effects it has had on them. Loosing their home because they can no longer afford the mortgage. Loosing vehicles and having to spend all their investments just to make it by. That is just one of the many reasons I am so passionate about what I do. If that family would have had a Life Insurance policy, life would have been dramatically diferrent. I am extremely passionate about helping people protect their assets and more importantly their families. That is also the reason I provide LTC insurance to the folks I meet with everyday. It is desigend to protect your hard earned assets you have spent so long saving. It is desigend to protect your family as well. Who has children that can not work to take care of them? No one I know. The point I am trying to make is that insurance is for the What If in life and to protect you and your loved one's. Say what you want about people in the insurance industry but I know that there are people like me who are in this business to help people have the peace of mind we all deserve. Thank you for reading this and I hope you don't write off insurance as a whole. Also for those of you who's LTC premiums have gone up, do some research on newer plans. I would recommend John Hancock's LTC policies as a place to start.

I would like to thank all of you who have commented on Long-Term Care Insurance. It has been very helpful. I, too, was told that my premiums would stay the same every year. Since that turned out to be a lie, I didn't believe a word after that. Now I am reconsidering whether I even need the insurance or if I should just save my money and bank it on my own with interest. I am 55 years old. (I abhor people that lie.)

My advice is to stay away from Unum. They have a very poor record on actually paying claims. I had disability insurance with them and they have terminated my benefits. Like many insurance policies, they're great until you actually need them. Then the company carefully goes through your records and finds excuses to not pay benefits. At that point you can sue them, but going through litigation is hard when you're dealing with health issues. They literally bank on that.

There are other companies to choose from. Perhaps the Insurance Commissioner in your state can give you feedback on which companies are better with claims management. In California, the Insurance Commissioner called Unum and "outlaw corporation" because of their unfair practices.

Good luck.

I have a policy that i purchased when I was 52 years of age. I purchased this policy with the assurance the premiums would stay the same, as well as my coverage. Because I purchased this policy while I was young I got a good deal. Now that I'm retired and living on a fixed imcome, my Insurance Company has decided to change my premiums to a higer rate and has informed me that coverages may be effected as well. Well so much for long term care. THis policy that i have doesn't kick in unless i'm really sick ie; bed ridden, can't wipe or clean myself, ect, ect. Its insurance that only pays for assistance under the strictest rules. I understood that when I purchased the policy, but because i have no children to help me I though it necessary. Who else in my family has the time to really take care of me when i become incopacitated.... Now that the premiums are going to go up, I'm faced with canceling my poicy. There goes 10 years of paying on time and thousands of dollars to boot.. I figure if I become that ill, i'll let the state take care of me for free. Insurance companys are really destroying and erroding what little trust we have in them anymore. So to all you younger people out there who are seriously thinking about Long Term Care. Don't waste your time on it it is not worth it.

What is the criteria for going into an assisted living home?I know for most nursing homes there is a criteria a patient must meet. Is there something liken to this for an assisted living home? What does a family with a parent who has dimentia need to do to find a home for the parent? what questions does the family members need to ask and what does the family members need to know before visiting a facility? My parents have long term care insurance.
