Others may have already suggested this, but there is no ranking for critical care medicine. It's a shame because, as a critical care physician, I know for a fact that many of the hospital outcomes depend on the performance of it's ICUs.

I see you have the U of IL Hospitals ranked 29 out of 5200 hospitals. As a former student of UICOM, I must seriously question the methodology used to compute these rankings. You folks must be basing this on what can be shown to you. Based on what I have seen the UICOM and their hospital is one very ####y place: http://www.all4webs.com/5/4/palexa39757/ Not only is there a serious curricular invalidity to the place, there is also a serious medical invalidity to the place. They also have a nasty habit of passing things off as "acceptable" with a very demented form of "statistical morality." Just look at them, they are the big MDs at the U of IL. Based on my experience in dealing with folks, they rank near the bottom. A good example of the dual invalidity to the place is how they handle their students. Though not mentioned in my Expose, the UIC counsel had the nerve to inform my counsel, that I should be considering the ADA! My lawyer said he has not seen such institutionalized virulence and acrimony in his dealings before. The ADA is not in reference to the Dental Association but rather the American with Disabilities Act! What they do is they know students are very deep in debt. And what they did with another student who wished not to be incorporated into my Expose and would not provide the documentation for the Expose purposes, is they had him take on the diagnosis of paranoid schizoaffective to have his school loans discharged under the provisions of the ADA. He had about 85K discharged under such. They wanted to the same with me! Possibly, I have more chutzpah than that guy. But in either case the diagnosis is completely bogus. Obviously, the other student who had his loans discharged cannot openly state this since he took this route. But it is totally bogus tactic they will push on their students who in that incident was also their patient. U of IL hospitals and the affiliated medical school UICOM is one of the most uncredible places I have ever been to.

Sad not to see any Arizona hospital in this category.

I had seizures for years. Bad ones. A Doctor here in Florida removed all my medications and for 6-7 months I was doing OK. We went to Canada away from Montreal, in the mountains and there in a busy restaurant I had a big attack and all the costumers left the restaurant without pay their meals and I end up in the hospital in other town. My lady had hard times to find the other small town and the hospital in the evening hours. Anyway the Doctors there they had no information of my medical history and give me the same medications that I had in Florida and I end up back to the same stage I was before. Many Doctors, many Hospitals included one in England , I had the same attack in the mall and end up at the Hospital nearby there. After 8 years of my medical episodes we did came across in a medical seminar and we went in and spoke with the Doctor who was specialized my seizure episodes and we went a second time and we did decided to do an operation on my left side of my head to solve my seizures. Quest what? The operation was OK but I end up with different episodes worst than the seizures that I had and today the Doctors they don not know what happened to me and do not want to deal with me at all. I had changed about 23 Doctors and still I have to leave like this. The Mayo Clinic did stated that I do not have seizures but they do not now what it is. All my tests coming clear so now I have to leave the rest of my life like this with all those seizure medications. Dilantin 100mg 5 a day, Clonazepam 1mg 2 a day, Lamotrigine 25mg 6 a day, plus my other medications and plus my pain killers. What is going on with our medical. Do I have to be like this the rest of my life without going out to avoid those strange episodes without medical explanation. My medical story it is very long.

Meow. Me like this list. It's about time we Americans ranked something.

I guess the overall rankings must use some methodology that somehow places Mass General above the Mayo Clinic even though Mayo outranks Mass General in 11 of the 16 adult specialties. Using an average rank for each of the specialties may be an over simplification but it also clearly places Mayo in 2nd place above Mass General. Totally weak game Mass General, and patting yourselves on the back for climbing into the number 2 position based on being superior in only 5 of the 16 areas makes this list seem rigged with an east coast bias. Let's face it Mass General you take credit for being #1 in psychiatry, that's like taking a home economics course in high school to boost your GPA.

Thank you very much for the nice post and an useful link. I had learned about plastic surgery as an assistant at Dr. Pasquale's office http://www.nerve.org/. Since then I am interested in this area. I have listened to some lectures in Korea, and Japan. But as everyone knows, America has advanced technique and skills so I am looking forward it to develop as its leader.

All the best hospitals in the US are not automatically the best hospitals in the world.

I am very sick and have been sick for over 5 years with increasing symptoms and worsening of my condition. I have had septic shock 3 times, multiple blood clots, lost my gallbladder, entire large intestine and have a ileostomy, always have a small pericardial effusion sometimes worse than others, rashes that come and go,developed RA and C&S protein deficiency, c-diff twice, ecoli in my blood once,so many UTI's I can't count them, Interstitial Cytitis, Anemia's, shortness of breath, chronic infections many resistant, chronic diarrhea, gastroparesis, malabsorption, chronic fatigue I think, pulmonary embolism, acute renal failure, electrolyte imbalances, hair falling out, insomnia, and all of this started after a stomach bug. I have a port in my chest and a interstim in my hip.My specialist don't know what the problem is and have been unable to identify what is wrong and causing my symptoms. They referred me to the Mayo Clinic in MN and I was refused to be seen based on my records from 2007, I was not a canidate for their facility. Then my primary tried John Hopkins and they also refused to see me. I called myself to see how to get an appt and was given to an appt concierge who told me they take patients who have already been diagnosed and then they treat them. WOW. Is there any place I can go that will help me get well? I have great insurance, I pay my bills and I follow Dr orders. I just need specialized diagnostics to figure out what all is happening to my body. So if the specialty centers don't treat the sick who does? Where do you go? I am 50 years old with 3 children, married 27 years to the love of my life. I pray everyday for wellness but I see now I am only a chart with symptoms and not a human worth your efforts. MAYO, MN and John Hopkins you maybe number 1, but in my book not for empathy, caring, kindness, treating the sick, or even one of your own as I am a RN. What kind of medicine is this you are practicing? It isn't the right kind. It is sad really, my case I get sick and I am sent to the ER because no one knows what to do. The ER admits me because they don't know what is wrong either. No one practices real medicine of treating the patient, by listening, looking at symptoms, no you have to order big test and if they don't tell you what it is you say it is in their head or they are drug seeking. Well it is not in my head and I am certainly not drug seeking. I am ill, sick, something is wrong and all of you with your high cost degrees at your highly ranked hospitals won't even treat me. You read my chart and it full of mistakes and wrong information told my Dr. I was not a canidate for your facility. They should include a ranking for your egos as well. Last time I checked you were human too.
