Boys and Children Under One Most Frequently Rushed to ER for Choking
A study published today in the Pediatrics journal analyzes a parental nightmare: children's choking hazards. Researchers took a look at nonfatal, choking-related emergency room visits in the United States that involved food. The visits involved kids ages zero through 14 and spanned from years 2001 to 2009. In that time period, 111,914 children, or about 12,500 per year, were treated for choking in the ER. Children one year of age or younger accounted for about 38 percent of the visits, and males accounted for about 55 percent of cases.
Hard candy was most frequently the choking culprit, followed next by other types of candy. Meat and bone were the next most frequent causes of choking. Nearly 90 percent of the children who visited the ER were treated and released, while 10 percent was hospitalized, and roughly 3 percent left against medical advice. To help reduce these incidences, the researchers suggest, "[i]mproved surveillance, food labeling and redesign, and public education."

Yes, we've wondered this countless times before – why President Clinton would risk his presidency for a fling with an intern, or why anyone, from a friend to a cousin to ourselves, has a compulsion for drugs, sex, food or alcohol.
In Weiner's case, we don't know if his behavior is born of entitlement or even narcissism, a level of self-absorption that crowds out concern for others. Maybe he subconsciously wants to sabotage his marriage, or maybe he doesn't know how to seek out his sexual desires within his marriage. Maybe he's just a really big jerk.
