Stacy London: Rewriting Your Life Story Through Style

Using style as a shortcut to improved self-esteem.

NEW YORK, NY - OCTOBER 26: TV personality Stacy London hosts the grand opening of the Stuart Weitzman Boutique at Bloomingdale's on October 26, 2011 in New York City.

And yet, style has its place—well below the stature of character, London says. But she warns against underestimating the power of style to trigger personal transformation. When people see themselves differently, they can reclaim themselves, and even let go of the long-held stories or roles they use to define themselves, she explains. "What is magical and mystifying to me about style is not that by seeing we can believe. It is that eventually, we can believe, because we can see ... we can embrace change the more we can make it tangible."

London draws on this sensibility along with her personal struggles to coax others on the path to self-acceptance. In turn, the experience has a rebound effect. "Allowing them to accept themselves has really helped me so much in my acceptance of myself," London tells U.S. News.
