Cycling is also a great way to make shorter trips.

When we speak of mixed use villages, I believe that safety is key. As it presently stands, the culture favors motor vehicles to the extent that a relaxing walk in most parts of your typical American city is anything but relaxing. Before neighborhoods can became walkable and pedistrian friendly, drivers must first slow down and become courteous. I appeal to transportation engineering to come to the rescue.

Terrific story. There couldn't be a more timely discussion, as aging Boomers find themselves isolated in car-dependent 'burbs and rising energy costs penalize commutes to work, shopping and schools for all families.

Thanks for keeping this topic high on our agendas.
