Jack Murray of TX, your line of questioning deserves an answer. Luckliy there are very logical ones.
Reason why dental assistant/hygeinist is first out of the room during an xray: X-rays today used in dental offices emmit a quick burst of "radiation". The amount is so small that a couple of x-rays every year is not an issue. Its equivalent to the amount of sun an average person is exposed to during a day. For those working in the dental office, if they were to be present for every x-ray, that could accumulate to a thousand x-rays a year. No one should be exposed to that many x-rays over a prolonged period of time.
This study does nothing to the discredit the importance of x-rays. The fact is they detect oral cancer regularly. They detect deteriation of the root and give a map of how to treat the tooth so as to help make the least invasive opertaion possible. They do so much to aid in the overall health of a patient, that not getting an x ray once a year as an adult is silly.
Most people go to the dentist when something hurts. If I were in that situation, I would want the dentist to know what is happening below the surface of the gums before they start drilling.

"They found that those with brain tumors were more than twice as likely to report having had at least one bitewing X-ray in their life". Who hasn't had atleast one bitewing radiograph in their whole life? This statistic cannot truly be considered significant, nor correlative. Not to mention, the benefits of diagnosing dental decay, or other problems in a child far outweigh this non-correlative, potential for a brain tumor. This study's protocol and data needs to be more carefully reviewed and presented fairly in the media before parents start refusing standard, diagnosis and preventive care for their children.

What they also didn't discuss is the fact that you receive more radiation living at a high altitude such as Denver than from dental x rays. Maybe the study should say that people who live at higher altitudes are more likely to get brain cancer, or it could be that they are more likely to drive a hybrid, or brush their teeth…..There are significant flaws in articles like this. I know that sounds like I am making it up, but this is called a confounder and in research it is important to tease all of this data out and them perform a Randomized controlled trial or at least give us some more information than a blanket statement that makes it sound like the gospel.
As to address JACK MURRY's statement that dentists run out of the room, it is because you are correct that x-rays can be damaging, however it takes significant exposure and in the dental office. You as a patient may take 4 x-rays a year, while the dentist or staff sees lets say 30 patients a day, 200 days a year, and each patient gets 4 x-rays that would be an exposure of 24,000 x-rays per year. So it would make sense that the dentist and staff leave the room. Sorry Jack, you are just wrong in your thinking.
As the American public we alter our behavior each time new research comes out. Like this week coffee is good for us and next week it causes cancer. We need to insist that the skewed media report factual and scientific backing and we as the American people aren’t so gullible when it comes to “news”

As a scientist myself I say this "study" is nonsense... I bet those same patients use cell phones, watch TV, eat red meat, or live under power lines. Who hasn't had dental x-rays? "More than twice as likely to have had one" What??? If those people live in the US and are over 20 years old I would venture to say 100% who've had fillings have had this X-ray.

It is too bad that dentists have resisted this information for years. If it is so safe as they casually assure us, the patient, then why are they the first out of the room as the xrays take place ?
Coincidently, when I have asked why these are needed, I have been told that these annual xrays will detect cancer.
Good luck with this reasoning based on these new findings.
