Here's a natural supplement your doctor will love: chia seeds. They're naturally high in fiber, protein, omega 3s, vitamin Bs, and antioxidants. They also act as a natural appetite suppressant because of all the water they're able to absorb. www.chiaseedtips.com.

I always find it interesting that these findings are supported by the traditional AMA et als Never a naturopathic or wholistic reference supporting their findings. While the information put forth here may very well be "on the spot" correct, it does stink of major pharmaceutical companies not wanting any "alternatives" treading on their toes. AND FDA approval or disapproval is always suspect.

Point here is that it would be to everyone's benefit if the medical factions could cross the fence and work together for the benefit of mankind, pro or con.

So sad to see the repeated accusation about the greed in the supplement industry. This seems to be very hypoctitical when people who are paying attention see the corruption and conflict of interest in the FDA. Anyone paying attention to the drug commercials on TV and using common sense can ask themselves, "and why should we take this?" The side effects are so often greater than what they are claiming to treat. The pharmaceutical industry is beyond the word greedy. Maybe you should investigate the mark up prices on common drugs before calling anyone else greedy. There are supplements with solid science out there so please don't throw the baby out with the bath water so to speak. Also consider the marketing practices used by the pharmaceutical industry to sell Doctors on the use of their products. People are waking up to the fact that they want to be more informed and responsible about what they are putting into their bodies.

Regarding Ginko, it is proven to increases capillary blood flow to certain parts of the brain. Seems like that should be a good thing. If people don't have unrealistic expectations, Gonko is probably one of the few supplements that can improve quality of life as we age. Anna, you might try to be a bit more objective in your writings.

do doctors dislike these herbs because they replace the pharmaceuticals that actually harm people dreadfully -- much more than these herbs appear to from your text --and the drug companies w/their 'representatives' who give samples to the docs so they will prescribe their drugs, as well as give all kinds of 'incentives', such as trips, to the docs to 'promote' prescribing their drugs, so the docs don't get the perks from the drug companies when their patients take herbs instead of drugs? i think to do a really important, impartial study, you ought to show the 'efficacy' and side-effects of the drugs that supposedly treat the same symptoms/conditions side by side w/this supposed 'study' -- which is full of vague, unsupported statements and unwarranted conclusions. as a researcher myself, i'm totally surprised w/this kind of reporting as being factual and accurate. supplement companies are 'greedy', but the pharmaceutical companies aren't? is this a joke?

It's sad to see this type of article, which could easily be trusted by the uninformed, but is easily dismissed by anyone with medical education. The author is either highly suggestible or has ill intent.

I take Ginko Biloba and DO notice a difference. I am not smarter, but do think more clearly. I take Echinacea to ward off colds/respiratory flu's. I swear by it! I havent had a cold now for about 5 years. Black Cohash did nothing of me nor did Valarien (another herb toting menopause relief).. And St John's Wort made me mean and unbearable to be around. It is something everyone should check into...

I would really like to see the author prove this statement, "Supplement makers are even more profit-driven than pharmaceutical companies."

I found that the black cohosh did help me thru warm ones, not hot flashes. It also took the edge off of my "attitude" My hubby would tell me to take my "bitch pills". Took it for a couple of years. So due to what you are saying, it helped me. I think women have to decide what works for them. I'm sorry you feel that it doesn't work. You should get more feedback from those of us where it has helped, rather than the negative for saying that it didn't work. Some women will try everything to get relief. Please put a positive on Black Cohosh.
