U.S. News has added the 247 hospitals below to its roster of Best Regional Hospitals 2011-12, extending the designation to hospitals outside the largest U.S. metropolitan areas. (An additional 720 Best Regional Hospitals are located in 94 metro areas with populations of 500,000 or more; see hospital rankings by metro area.) All Best Regional Hospitals, regardless of location, have met the same standard: They were recognized in July 2011 as high performing in at least one of the 16 specialties U.S. News evaluates.

What is a "high-performing" hospital?
A high-performing hospital has met performance standards in one or more Best Hospitals specialties that are almost as demanding as those set for nationally ranked Best Hospitals. U.S. News recognizes such a hospital as a Best Regional Hospital. If it is in a major metropolitan area, it is ranked within that metro area. To learn more about Best Regional Hospitals and the metro rankings, read the methodology for hospital rankings in metro areas.
What standards did high-performing hospitals have to meet?
U.S. News evaluates hospitals in 16 adult specialties, relying primarily on hard data in 12 of them. To be considered high-performing in one of those specialties, a hospital had to score among the top 25 percent of all hospitals evaluated for the Best Hospitals rankings. In the four specialties that base rank on reputation alone, a hospital had to be named by at least 3 percent of the surveyed physicians who responded. A Best Regional Hospital may be high-performing in just one specialty or as many as 16.
Are high-performing hospitals outside major metro areas ranked?
No. U.S. News does not rank Best Regional Hospitals in any way except within metro areas.
