Traditional insurance does not always pay. A year after our now 12-year-old was born, the doctor and hospital demanded payment from us because our insurance company had not yet paid. They continued to collect our premium but never paid their share of our medical bills. We then switched insurance companies, but the new policy had a 24-month waiting period for maternity. So, we ended up paying the next baby 100% out of pocket, too, even though we had been paying the maternity rider the whole time. I also went to the doctor once 3 years ago, and the insurance still hasn't paid that either. Each monthly statement says, "insurance pending."

do you get back the $1K+ per month that Medicare HMO takes for having your name on their list (capitation)?

I have no idea where you got that idea Frank but you are misinformed. I work for the ministry and we are taking care of the needs of christians who are tired of the high cost of medical insurance and DO NOT want to contribute to abortion, drug addicts, alcoholics, and tobacco users high medical bills. Why should we only have one option? Insurance. Jesus commanded us to bear one another's burdens and to take care of His temple/our bodies. If we are to keep that command then we must have an alternative.
Would you hand a young lady money to pay for an abortion? Most would not! But you are doing just that by taking part in the world's answer to health care costs. Some insurance companies will pay for abortions for ANY reason through the 6th month!!!

Sadly the internet is full of businesses claiming to be "christian". Some are honest and unethical. Most are not.
"Christian based" mlm's and other pyramid schemes have been coming and going for some time. Arizona, Utah and Texas have been hotbeds of various schemes including alternative medicine, affinity investment programs, various types of insurance programs etc.
Bottom line- do your due diligence before getting involved in any religious based biz op.

Anywhere you have people you have problems. Christian or Atheist. People are people they all make mistakes and bad decisions at times. That doesn't mean they are sinister. You are going to run into problems with insurance companies too. It is just who would you rather work with.

Hey, we are all on our own. The healthcare system is a mess and showing no signs of getting better. The costs for the "new" law is, daily, being shown to be much more expensive than anyone was originally told.
So the only good advice is DO YOUR HOMEWORK and if anything sounds questionable, it probably is. Just don't dismiss it because it is different.
I intend to check out Medishare further and try to figure out just what is up.
Of course, it appears I can't join Medishare in my state, Illinois.

This is interesting. If they held true to their advertisements they would pay whatever with no limits on preexisting conditions. Doesn't sound like an old testament Christian Community as they seem to advertise. Everyone pitches in and helps their brother.

I'm glad to find out about the sinister undercurrent in MediShare. As usual, faith based groups will find a way to weed out and cheat those members who, at the time of claim or complaint, don't meet their "standards." I'm very disappointed, but of course Christ warned us about false prophets. The true Christian model is that practiced by the Amish and Old Order Mennonites, in which extraordinary and unexpected expenses are taken care of by the "common tithe" that all members of the community pay. There is no middle man. Unfortunately, the Amish are a "closed community" of Anabaptist believers who, contrary to popular belief, do not shun "modern conveniences" but only those things that draw people away from the family and community. For example, they have been in the forefront of living "off the grid" by generating their own power through wind and generators and propane since their inception. You have to be born into, join at maturity, or be "born again" by embracing the faith through marriage. That doesn't happen very often, because it is too hard for outsiders, although easy for those who have always lived the life.
