A Pill to Cure Alcoholism?

Since when does taking a pill give answer to a deep-seated spiritual problem? I know from experience that it just doesn't happen. When anyone is caught up in any one of several addictions, there is an underlying cause most people refuse to admit, namely, a broken relationship with God.

Other wise why do we think our problems and issues are solved from indulging alcohol, crack, pot, eating disorders, immoral sex, gambling, smoking or whatever? The broken relationships of many a marriage did not seek their solutions in humility and Bible-based counseling; rather it was sought in the local bar, on the street corner, at a casino, or on the internet. That's right people, human nature hasn't changed since the Garden of Eden. It's an issue of the heart and the mind doesn't want to see that, let alone accept and do something about it. Hello, is anyone out there listening?

as the same type of person as Danny S., i too was able to surrender and, in an apparent act of weakness, received the true gift of sobriety.

what was so freely given to me i, in turn, must freely give to the next suffering alcoholic.

the bottle was but a symbol for a much larger underlying problem- a lack of true spiritual development.

my TS program demands "love and tolerance of my fellow man"; i must practice these principles in all my affairs.

and if Science now has found a "cure" i need to see some historical data to base my judgement.

more will be revealed...

A "pill" that removes the mental obsession to drink along with reversing the physical damage done that results in phenomenon of craving? Give me a freakin' break. Just another well financed attempt by the "Addictions Industry" to reclaim the recvoery business it pissed away seventy years ago when Twelve Steps programs came around and wholesale a solution that worked and did not cost money.

Although topiramate (Topamax) may, and hopefully will, prove to be a useful adjunct to other treatment, it does not address rehabilitation that may be required in related areas.

The chaotic, unhealthy, and often prolonged lifestyle of many alcoholics can require treatment and therapy to facilitate improvements in mental health, lifestyle change, social rehabilitation and a variety of other physical and emotional areas, including detection and amelioration of infectious diseases.

Topiramate may well prove to be a godsend in helping people stop drinking, but it will not relieve many of the pressures that can lead to relapse. Should it be used as an end in itself, it could even prove to complicate the problem as just another substitution program similar to some already in use. That it is readily available to general practitioners, the vast majority of whom have little or not training in addiction treatment, makes that rather more likely.

This might be a very good thing for many people and the country as a whole, but could cause a decline in sales at Hensley & Company.
