I used to do this and it really worked for me, however...

My aunt is the director of the ICU at her hospital and she sees people come in weekly with terrible infections (often fungal) from people using neti pots and sinus rinses. The infection often spreads through the passages of your sinuses into the backs of your eyes. Sometimes, the only remedy is removing the eye.

I know plenty of people use them with no problems, but my doctor never told me about the risks involved. For me, the relief wasn't nearly enough to justify the risk, even if it is very little.

I'm posting this to educate... I see a ton of "news" stories about the benefits of neti pots but I had not seen a single thing about the risk until talking to my aunt. I really wish people would be more responsible with the information they put out there.

thank you, I live in san antonio, tx, everyone here suffers from allergies when they move here, I have had allergies ongoing for almost 4 years, I can't seem to adjust, the salt water thing helped clear me and feel better for awhile, I will continue doing it, Jackie

I suffered with sinusitis for year with multiple infections a year. A couples years ago i got a very large accidental "nasal rinse" while snorkeling in the ocean. I got a large amount of sea water up my nose. About 30 minutes later my sinuses just gushed water, and again after about another 15 minutes. I have not had a sinus infection since!

I am suffering from a stuffy nose right now and was reading this and remembered what I had learned in chemistry about buffers and realized that adding the baking soda in the recipe would be a very bad idea since buffers neutralize acids and there is no acid there would be no point in the baking soda. The salt water worked just fine though :)

why not use iodine salt and should the rinse be done two a day? Is one of the symptoms of a sinus infection dizziness?
