hormone replacement
It is so difficult to figure out what info in reliable. Some say you need hormone replacement and swear by it as on Oprah's show and than i read articles like these and it just makes me more confused and scared especially i have a doctors appt. this tuesday for bioidentical hormone replacement. i just wish that people would come together with the same opinion about this since this is a very serious matter concerning our health.
There Are Studies Verifying The Safety Of Bioidentical Hormones
Linda B, there are health care practitioners who will listen to you and provide treatment that will help you. Unfortunately, there are also many doctors who are uninformed about HRT options and who offer ineffective or even risky treatments, or none at all to their suffering patients.
I highly recommend reading "Breakthrough: 8 Steps To Wellness" and Somers' earlier book "Ageless," which is mainly about bioidentical hormone therapy. "Breakthrough" lists HRT specialists by state in its resource section, and there are others across the U.S.. Don't give up!
There ARE studies on the safety and efficacy of bioidentical hormones, including one large-scale study that compared the risks associated with synthetic and bioidentical hormones.
In 2005 the Fournier Study published in the International Journal of Cancer followed 54,000 women who took bioidentical estrogen and either bioidentical progesterone or progestin. (Progestins are synthetic progesterone.)
The women taking the bioidentical progesterone had a 10 percent DECREASE in the risk of breast cancer while the women taking the synthetic progestin had a 40 percent INCREASE in the risk of breast cancer.
A follow-up article published in 2007 in Breast Cancer and Treatment looked at 80,000 women. Women taking bioidentical estrogen and progesterone had no increase in the rate of breast cancer, while those taking an artificial progestin had an increase of 69 percent in the risk of breast cancer.
The de Lignieres Study published in 2002 in Climacteric concluded that the risk of breast cancer is not increased with bioidentical hormones but is increased with synthetic progestin.
Bioidentical hormones have been used in Europe for almost fifty years. Since bioidentical hormones are available in relatively inexpensive generic forms that can be applied using non-patentable formulations by a compounding pharmacist, American drug companies have no interest in sponsoring studies on the safety and efficacy of bioidentical hormones.
In fact, American drug companies have an inherent conflict of interest that discourages studies that produce data that supports the safety and effectiveness of bioidentical hormones. When American companies sponsor HRT studies they are invariably done using synthetic hormones and/or newly-devised "delivery systems" that can be patented. The ultimate goal is to produce a highly profitable drug and a reliable revenue stream for the duration of the drug patent. As has been proven over and over in recent years, producing a safe and effective treatment is not the primary goal of much medical research in the United States.
I have personally witnessed the difference in women who switched from synthetic HRT to bioidentical hormones and the results are simply amazing. Side-effects associated with synthetic hormones disappear along with the debilitating symptoms of menopause. The improvement in quality of life can be quite profound.
(I am a researcher and do not derive income from HRT.)
