just me

thank you for this site i was considering the pill and/or the procedure to ending the pregancy..but no thank you this is not the way to go god bless

The article states that a handful of women have died in this country after taking the "abortion pill", another commenter stated that "a number of women" have died.

I think it is important to point out that the total number of deaths has been five, and that there have been NO deaths since abortion providers began offering universal antibiotic coverage to women seeking medical abortions.

The Pill

Have the baby and let the vast number of people waiting for adoptions raise them to be happy adults. Don't use the pill.

Abortion

Abortion is murder. No matter how you do it.

Thanks for the Insight - What evidence do you have that physical and psychological effects have been underreported? I have read several recent studies citing that relief is actually far more common after an abortion than other emotions. As for the physical effects, if done in a safe medical environment, abortion is far kinder to women's bodies than pregnancy and childbirth.

Misinformation

If you have a fever, by all means contact your doctor. But as the FDA points out, even in the section you cite (the FDA label, at http://www.fda.gov/cder/foi/label/2005/020687s013lbl.pdf, goes into more detail), these infections sometimes present without fever. And how will women without medical training distinguish between "severe abdominal pain" or "pelvic tenderness" and the painful cramping they are told is part of the chemical abortion process? The situation is fraught with danger, especially so for women who lack the medical knowledge and insight of a trained physician.

Deborh Kotz Responds

Actually I was correct in warning about fever.

This is from the FDA's website. http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/infopage/mifepristone/mifepristone-qa20041115.htm

In postmarketing experience following the use of Mifeprex and misoprostol, FDA has received reports of cases of serious bacterial infection, including very rare cases of fatal septic shock. No causal relationship between these events and the use of Mifeprex has been established. Although infection following medical abortion is rare, prescribers should be alert to the possibility of infection in their patients. In particular, a sustained fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, severe abdominal pain, or pelvic tenderness in the days after taking Mifeprex and misoprostol may be an indication of infection. Atypical presentations of serious infection and sepsis, without fever, severe abdominal pain, or pelvic tenderness, but with significant leukocytosis, tachycardia, or hemoconcentration can occur.

Dangerous Misinformation

Your column contains some serious misinformation. You say that women taking mifepristone who show signs of a fever should seek immediate medical attention, yet one of the unusual features of Clostridium sordellii infections is that patients are often afebrile, that is, they manifest no signs of a fever, even as the infection worsens. Check out the warnings on mifepristone on the FDA's own website.

One of the fundamental problems with this drug is that signs of infection, indications of a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, or evidence of hemorrhage, such as heavy bleeding, cramping, etc., may not be recognized as such by users of the drug who have been told that these are normal parts of the chemical abortion process.

As the column notes, even under medical supervision, a number of women have died after taking this drug. Sending out these pills to women who lack the requisite medical knowledge or observation is the height of callousness and irresponsibility.

Thanks for the insight

While I disagree with Deborah's approval of abortion, I applaud her for noting that the abortion pill is no vitamin and there are side effects. I just wonder how many women who take this are reminded of their abortions every time they go to their medicine cabinet. Unfortunately, the physical and psychological effects of abortion on women have been vastly under-reported.
