Pro-Life Drugstores and the Meaning of 'Abortion'

Why do pharmacists get to choose which prescriptions to fill?

Why should pharmacists be able to pick and choose which prescriptions to fill on moral -- or ANY -- grounds. Any pharmacy that refuses to fill a prescribed drug should have their license revoked.

Interesting

There are also other things implicated in the spontaneous abortion of an embryo. Many prescription drugs warn "do not take if you are pregnant" as they will cause a miscarriage. Also, heavy caffeine usage, binge drinking, undercooked meats, soft cheeses, and raw eggs have also been implicated in causing spontaneous abortions. I think that before we allow women to buy any of these items she ought to sit and give a urine sample to make sure she is not secretly trying to murder an innocent child. If she is, well, take her out back and burn her at the stake.

All kidding aside folks, but are we going back in time or what? Here we are pumping our kids brains with sexual images on a daily basis, telling men to pump it up with Viagra and Cialis, young (and I mean pathetically young) girls taught by the fashion/entertainment industry to pull the top down and hike the skirt up so men have a little booty to look at, then turning around and telling women they must pay a tremendous price for their irresponsible decisions. It makes no sense.

Pathology

The author's comparison of birth control to the availability of Viagra is, simply put, ignorant. ED is a pathological disorder requiring treatment; pregnancy is not. In fact, science tells us that pregnancy is the normal state of females in nature and not the continuous interruption and modification of menstruation cycles--offensive as that may sound.

Many pro-life advocates do not believe that the birth control pill, condoms, spermicide are wrong since these are not abortifacient. These do not terminate the viability of a fertilized egg but prevent conception and so, on a moral ground, are acceptable. On the other hand, Plan B and various forms of abortion DO terminate a life--not an egg, not a sperm--but a combination of the two that WILL result in a human being if left to nature.

Abortion should be illegal for no other reason than that there IS a debate as to when life begins. If life does not begin at conception and I am wrong--hey sorry my bad. But if I'm right, we, as a nation, have innocent blood on our hands. Which wrong would you rather be?

Birth control is a personal health decision. Government should butt out and worry about the people they are allowing to wallow in debt and poverty while bailing large corporations out. Abortion should not be defined as anything that is thought to prevent fertilization. Does every seed that falls from the tree survive? Humans are no different.

Pro-lifers are no more than the sex police. Most people disagree with abortion -- but it is safe contraception that allows women to go out into the workforce and earn much needed income without worrying about the income that is lost by being pregnant. The costs and stress on family when contraception is taken away would put an even greater strain on social programs.

Apparently women can't be trusted to be gatekeepers of their own morals. I'm just curious-- is there some VIP section in heaven that the right to lifers hope to be seated in? Do they accumulate bonus points for every unborn life they think they are saving? Do they get to cash these points in for some sky box on Cloud Nine?

Maybe they can form their own utopia somewhere in rural Kentucky. Otherwise, they can leave the rest of us the h#ll alone.

Pro-lifers are nothing more than the sex police who want women barefoot and pregnant. I don't agree with abortion--once it is proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the woman is pregnant. Fertilization cannot be pinpointed to the exact time it occurs. Therefore, we have pro-lifers protesting the birth control pill on the "off-chance" that the woman "may be" pregnant." Women have 250,000 eggs and they ovulate every month for roughly 30 - 35 years. I sincerely doubt that every egg that a woman stores in her body was intended to become a human being. If God intended for every egg to be a potential fetus, he'd have given us maybe 5 (give or take) eggs and each one of them would have been fail proof.

Not to mention that the pro-lifers seem like a bunch of nosy nellies who believe that butting into everyone else's life will improve their chances of going to heaven. Pro-lifers are really pro-obstructionist, pro-poverty, and pro-Big Brother. I can't wait until Obama kicks these morons out of office.

Another Response to Bev of NY

Bev of NY: You said "Either you pay to support all the resultant children or give people the CHOICE to make decisions about their own bodies and lives!!"

To respond, simply because the CHOICE (and when you say "choice" I'm guessing you really meant to say the choice to abort the unborn baby or fetus or whatever other watered-down phrase you prefer without having to actually come out and say it because then it doesn't sound nearly as bad that way) is not JUST about their own body and life but about ANOTHER body and life as well.

Also, you questioned if some people have a god complex. I would say that "yes", that is indeed the case. Trouble is, you too have a god complex. In fact we all do. As I think you alluded to in your post, we are all created in the image and likeness of God (heard that one before?) and when we go around spontaneously killing these defenseless little images and likenesses of God, it is truly a very serious, sad and eternally consequential event -- and so very much more than just a choice.

Kelsea's Job Decision

Kelsea,

I think the question you brought up about how you might lose your job, with the choices you decide to make, is an interesting one. However, I think you dramatically changed the analogy by posing WHO you might or might not serve. I think the "apples to apples" comparison to this discussion would be WHAT you served to your customers. Indeed, as your future fiancé Jer mentioned in his post above, maybe we should be more concerned with what unhealthy food we consume (as well as what drugs we consume). Because, as I think we can all agree, certain food like certain drugs are dangerous and should be avoided. And those druggists and waitresses who serve their customers these dangerous products certainly do have "blood on their hands" for giving them something not good for them. The next time you pick up that double bacon cheeseburger and side of fries from the heat table and set it down in front of an obese patron in your section, I would have you think of the local pharmacist in your town filling an order for mifepristone or misoprostol (RU-486) for that young lady at his or her counter. Because, really, what’s the difference? So, I would encourage all wait servers to take a serious look at what foods or drinks they serve to their customers, stockbrokers to understand what stocks they invest in for their clients, manufacturers to know if they are using any unfair or unsafe labor, just as I thoroughly encourage all pharmacists to take a hard look at the products they sell. It matters what we each do. I think that's the point of this whole discussion.

Response to Bev of NY

Bev of NY: You said "Either you pay to support all the resultant children or give people the CHOICE to make decisions about their own bodies and lives!!"

This is the same reason that we should give the pharmacy owners the CHOICE to make decisions about their lives. Let's not have our government force them to sell something that they don't believe in.

Pro-lifers - the holier-than-thou

Why is it that people who think they are morally superior to everyone else feel the need to try and "make us in all their image"? Do they have a god complex? Do they think they are God? These are always the same people who are against providing financial and emotional support - for life - to the single/unwed mother and her child or overburdened family because they"chose" to have (all) those children or their "loose morals" resulted in this unplanned child. So Why isn't all prenatal health care free? Why don't all children have free health care? Why don't they feed these hungry children? Why don't they provide the childcare needed when these women want to continue their education or careers? Why do they say the recipients of public support have to work when they can't afford any of those things? You can't have it both ways!!!! Either you pay to support all the resultant children or give people the CHOICE to make decisions about their own bodies and lives!!
