Autism's Link to Parents' Schizophrenia
Reader Comments
Autism often misdiagnosed as SZ in the old days
Before the symptoms of autism where commonly recognized as such it was often misdiagnosed as schizophrenia. This study may be saying nothing more than autistic spectrum parents often have autistic spectrum kids. They should examine the parents with psychiatric records and see if they are autistic. Autism has many of the "negative" symptoms in common with schizophrenia, as some who experience illusions (not hallucinations). True psychosis seems to be pretty rare, but in the rush to stick a label on someone a doctor could easily ignore that, especially in a person who could not communicate well.
The problem with this story is not that the information is untrue (despite the above post) the problem is that people are not capable of interpreting the information correctly, and end up with false conclusions, such as autism is caused by having a "crazy parent", or in some other way linked to parenting, and that is clearly not the conclusion of this study.
All this study demonstrates is that two neurodevelopmental disorders (schizophrenia and autism) are correlated in parent-child relationships, and mood disorders and autism are more weakly correlated in mother-child relationships. This implicates a common gene that is expressed differently in parent than in child. The correlation needs to be replicated with further study to make certain there are not environmental reasons for the correlation between diagnoses, and the relationship truly is biological.
Autism story
Your story is pathetic. Your research, also pathetic. Of course a family who deals with human distress by using psychiatry is much more likely to place their child in front of a psychiatrist, and hence more likely to end up with these diagnoses / labels. None of these labels represent an objective known disease that can diagnosed with any objective scientific test, and the alleged genetic evidence you provide is completely false, there exists no genetic test for autism or schizophrenia, and you are a pathetic journalist.
Autism is also linked to father's age
Childhood schizophrenia is now called autism, one third or more schizophrenia is caused by older paternal age; this kind of schizophrenia is non-familial. Every study that has looked for it has found high paternal age in people with autism.
There should have been public health warning about the male biological clock and schizophernia and autism years ago. http://ebdblog.com/paternalage/ http://autism-prevention.blogspot.com/search?q=older+fathers Fragile X and tuberous sclerosis are linked to higher maternal grandfather's age at the mother's birth.
Kids drive you nuts.
My wife and I raised three normal(?) children to adulthood. I can say if that isn't enough to drive a person nuts nothing is. I can say that raising a child is the most demanding and hardest task that anyone can try to accomplish. It is also the most rewaording.
Please look into the Early Vacination as well
Thanks for your insight, but please look into the early childhood vacination as well.
Neither myself nor my wife suffers from any mental illness, but when son was vacinated at the age of 2, all the autistic traits started. My duaghter is 2, an dI refused the vacination and she is fine. I seriously suspect some link with autism/vacination.
