Multivitamins—a Health Hazard?

VITAMINS
I find it ridiculous to encourage people to "ditch" their vitamins. In our fast paced society, I am a nurse, it is difficult at times to eat a balanced, nutritious diet. Vitamins do not replace vital nutrients from food, but can help to supplement. I will continue to take herbs, vitamins and give them to my husband and children
Multivitamins
Multivitamins are made for money, not health. Most of the vitamins in multivitamin supplements are excreted through your intestional and urinary tract very quickly. Each person has a different metabolism and absorption of vitamins varies from person to person. Unless you have a multivitamin made specifically for your own personal metabolism,it is best just to eat a proper diet and obtain vitamins the correct way. Through food.
I had a situation recently involving daily multivitamins and retaining too much of certain vitamins caused fibrotic buildup in my right breast. Very painful and very frightening. I have since thrown out all the multivitamins and the breast fibrosis buidup has ceased and disappeared.

The Other Half of This Story
Recently, the University of California at Berkley did a long-term (20 year) study of the effectiveness of supplements.
The scientists who conducted this research are the leaders in their field.
Probably the most striking result of the study is that persons who used no nutritional supplementation at all were actually healthier than the persons who used the one capsule a day products made by pharmaceutical companies.
(One-A-Day)
Bayer Schering Pharma AG Headquartered in Leverkusen, Germany
Centrum
Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Headquartered in Madison, NJ)
The persons who used a broad spectrum of high quality naturally sourced nutritional supplements (Shaklee) over a long period of time were much less at risk for disease than non supplement users and the “one capsule a day” users.
The study was published in a peer reviewed scientific journal: see the abstract at: http://www.landmarkstudy.com/

is that true??
what a poor grammar :)
Multivitamins
The only people who really need multivatims are those who are hospitalized. A bag of intravenous fluid (http://www.med.mun.ca/surgery/pages/Presentations/IntravenousFluids_files/frame.htm) doesn't contain the same chemistry as a multivitamin pill. I swear by the IV because it can bring you back to life, save your life, and allow to keep living. I doubt if a multivitamin can do a tenth of the list.
calcium & D
I must take calcium & D. I am over the age 50 and I sure don't want osteoporosis.
I don't always have time to eat properly so I supplement with multi- vitamins.
Somebody please tell me who is right? Everything is too political these days.
Ancient Studies
In the world of science, this study might as well be an original copy of the Ten Commandments; THATS how old it is. This 'study' was done over a year ago, and since then has been followed up by many studies which contradict its findings. US News is simply recycling it- presumably because they have run out of material. Hey editors- surf ncbi for something a little more ground breaking.

Health problems
John of WA says "Everyone will get one form of cancer or another. Might as well take vitamins to prevent all the other illnesses and malnutrition related diseases."
But not everyone will get cancer. My mother did not have cancer when she died at the age of 90. She had dementia and possibly Alzheimer's, which inhibited her from being able to swallow.
But, a lot of people get cancer and it has a lot to do with petrochemicals, including organochlorines permitted in the past as economic poisons, and persistent in the environment and the food chain world wide. Dioxin, which is inadvertently created when paper and plastics are burned together, when certain weed killers have been spread upon the earth and when the fields on which sugar cane is grown, is burned; when paper is bleached white with chlorine; when medical wastes, municipal wastes, and other petrochemical made products or wastes are burned, dioxin is created. Dioxin does cause cancer, but it also damages the immune system leaving the body susceptible to parasites, viruses, and disease. Vitamins do not prevent reproductive diseases caused by petrochemicals, including dioxin, for example.
Some people take vitamins for potassium to prevent leg cramps. But nearly every vegetable on the planet contains potassium. Vitamins are no substitute for healthy eating.
I've found that many diseases we have are caused by western medicine. Doctors are taught to treat symptoms, not the disease. But the medications have side effects, and hence, other medications treat the side effects keeping the public continually on drugs.
