Prostate Cancer
I have been told that if one were to go through with the Proton Therapy and it doesn't work that it could put limitations on the surgery option later on. Is there any truth to this?
Proton Therapy for Prostate Cancer
I am a patient at Shands Proton, University of Florida
I have prostate Cancer
To fully appreciate you need to attend our Wednesday Luncheons at Shands Jacksonville and hear from the many one and two year graduates who now have psa of 0.1 and many have had no or little temporary side effects. The process destroys the cancer dna to the point where it cannot replicate. It does not kill the cancer but it slowly dies off naturally over a couple of years and does not return. The particle beam is focused entirely on the prostate with a brass template and a 3D lens. All very amazing yet we all understand the process before it starts and get into the physics of it all. There are 3 gantry's at Shands treating and two treat about 3 men an hour each... many children also being treated for brain tumors that are very dangerous to operate on. This is a proton particle beam (hydrogen protons) and not conventional radiation. Do your homework as we have all done to get here for the treatment. Not so easy to get into the program. You will need an informed Doctor, without conflict of interest, to help you.

I couldn’t understand some parts of this article, but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting.

Proton Beam Therapy
I'm 61 years old and was diagnosed with prostate cancer by biopsy over 7 years ago. I've done the research, read the books and discussed with other patients and doctors. The two things that come to light are cost VS quality of life. I am currently in treatment at MPRI of Bloomington Indiana. I have 8 treatments left out of a total of 45. I have had no serious side effects and only some minor uncomfortable urinary issues.
Without exception those I've spoken to have nothing bad to say. I'm not saying this is a new miracle cure. However, in my case it was a no brainer choice. My biggest problem has been a disagreement with my insurance carrier which I hope has been resolved. With regards to Prostatectomy one must concider the ongoing cost of hospitalization, followup treatment and rehab. There is also the question of quality of life, (IE: incontinence and ED)and the possibility of being unable to return to work due to complications. The long term verdict is not in but my choice was obvious.
Awesome information you have here. Thanks for sharing.
Great post. Gives me what I have been looking for.
